I'm trying to have the pactiance to grow a handle bar and I am at the stage where I think I want to start using some wax while it grows to keep it neat and under some control while it gr0ws what are some of the best mustache waxes and do any of you know where or if there are samples of the waxes like there are of the soaps and creams that we use.
From what I have read, it can be made, at home, easily & cheaply. Here is a link for some instructions. http://www.ehow.com/way_5182784_moustache-wax-recipe.html
I've used Pinaud - too creamy, not enough hold and I didn't like the scent. I've used Oregon Wild Hair - great scent, but a little light on the hold. I use Firehouse Wacky Tacky - nice scent, excellent hold. You can also get it at West Coast Shaving, so you can order it along with other shave goodies, too. I also make my own from beeswax and Vaseline. I looked at the recipe Sara linked (thanks!). I'll have to give the castor oil a try. Just from reading how they recommend to apply, I'd probably have to cut back on the amount of castor oil they recommend. Here's why - from the site: "Rub your finger lightly over the top of the wax. Avoid dipping your finger into the container, as too much wax can result in a greasy moustache. Instead, coat your fingertip lightly, and then apply to the moustache." That tells me their wax is more like the Pinaud cream I mention above. Here are directions from the Firehouse folks: "PUSH (not scrape) wax up on the fingernail of your index finger, and then wipe it onto your thumb of the same hand. (Push like a bulldozer pushes up dirt.)" That tells me the wax is much firmer and will ultimately give a better hold. Check out The Handlebar Club. There are links to mustache FAQs, DIY mustache wax, and suppliers of 'stache wax.
When I grow my goat out I like the pinaud. I actually like the smell. But their are times I don't think it's holding power is all that. I heave heard lots of great things about firehouse. I looked around for samples about two years ago and scored a big zero when I wanted to give something esle a try. If I can find the tube one tube of pinaud I have and switched to the colored you are welcome to it for free.
I'm using Pinaud right now just due to it being readily available here in Kingston. I'm ordering Firehouse when I get home though, too many good things heard about it.
Hmmm, been flip flopping between Wacky Tacky and Dark lately. Still can't decide! From what I've been reading dark would match my facial hair better, ARGH.
Justin, the Wacky Tacky is a dark brown, but it virtually disappears once it's brushed in. I haven't tried the Dark, so I can't comment on the hold, but the Wacky Tacky is great stuff.
I had to laugh that there was an option to "read this page in UK English." Otherwise, I have nothing to contribute.
Couldn't decide Steve, so I bought 1 dark and 1 wacky tacky LOL. Hopefully the shipping will get here within 2 weeks, I can't wait to try this out. I've already tossed the Pinaud out completely and am waxless for now... I will be ordering some Foad as well as Bounder from the UK to try that out, they both get amazing reviews as well from the Handlebar Club members. now if only the handles would grow out sooner....
Cool! Let me know how things work out. And if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'll help where I can.
Thanks Steve! Looking forward to trying it out, even if the handlebar doesn't work out, I have a nice regular bar going on that can at least be kept tame and very neat with the wax. I tend to get impatient LOL, and watching hair grow is like watching water boil...
Yeah, because us Americans can't tell the difference between color and colour. It just makes our brains hurt trying to read our mother tongue.
