How would you compare AOS Sandalwood to TOBS?
I have AOS Sandalwood and would like to hear from people who have tried both.
AOS lathers very well and makes my skin really soft. The scent lingers with me
for most of the day but is not overpowering.

I have heard mixed things about the scent. Some say it smells like 'old man' while
others describe it as 'old fashioned barbershop'. Let me know your thoughts.

Does this cream appeal to those of all ages or only those in a specific age group?
I'm 45. I would also like to know how old you are and if SWMBO likes the scent too.

Let me know your thoughts. Since I cannot sample TOBS in any local store,
I would like to get some feedback from those who have used this product
    before I order it.

    Thanks in advance.
    Mike

TOBS sandalwood, like all TOBS creams lathers great and provides great cushion and glide. I think it has a classic barbershop scent. I'm 50 and love the scent. I don't go for that "it smells modern or old fashioned". Something either smells pleasant and masculine or not.

I'm a fan of sandalwood in general. I've never heard it described as a barbershop or old man scent. Sandalwood is a very basic, straight forward scent but there are variations on it for sure. I'm in early 40's, I'm single. When I'm visiting a woman I do not smell like shaving products, so I'm of no help to you there.

As far as lather goes, TOBS and AOS are very similar products. I prefer TOBS and not just because it's about 1/3 the price for what I see as essentially the same product. TOBS seems more refined to me, I can't put my finger on exactly why. That's a YMMV thing for sure.

As far as comparing scents, I like both the TOBS and AOS takes on sandalwood, but do not like that AOS seems to be much stronger and I definitely am not a fan of it lingering for so long. It seems like it's around for hours, and if you put their balm on top of it, it's around all day. TOBS lingers, but disappears and definitely doesn't run roughshod over a cologne or aftershave applied later.

If you were to tell me you wanted to give me either TOBS or AOS sandalwood, I'd pick TOBS. I wouldn't even think it over.

If you want a similar lather and a subtler sandalwood, I'd suggest looking at Proraso Red.

I love TOBS. I have a few creams and all work equally well. The sandalwood is one of my favourite scents. I also use TOBS sandalwood bath soap. As for the shave cream, thats the one my wife tells me she likes best. I'm 36 and the good lady is 30. She often calls me an old man, but never says I smell like one.

TOBS Sandalwood was my first shave cream and I think it's still my favorite. Definitely a masculine scent and great lather and glide. Can't recommend it enough.

    The same applies for me.

I am the opposite here. I prefer the scent of AOS. I like the strength of the scent and like that it lingers.

I'm a big fan of TOBS Sandalwood in both the soap and cream. The soap has a more subtle scent than the cream. I do think most sandalwood scents will linger. Another personal favorite is Salters Indian Sandalwood, cream only, though. I'm still just about as crazy as I was in my 20's (61 yrs. old now) and still don't really give a crap about what other people think. I'll have to say, if I could find a scent that repels engineers and construction supervisors, I'd buy the soap, cream and AS.
I must have gotten up on the right side of the bed this morning, lol.

Who cares what age group the scent appeals to? If you like it, use it.

I have only tried the Proraso my input should be taken with a grain of salt, however I am 31 and love the smell of Sandalwood as well as Aqua Velva, Mennen Etc. Don't be afraid to smell like a man. I am glad I read this because I will most definitely buy me some Tabac now.

AOS sandalwood is my all time favorite scent. Expensive? Yes. But believe once I run out I'm absolutely rebuying. As for TOBS its no slouch it's definitely aromatherapy and doubles as an air freshener because the scent will linger around for hours. The TOBS I would describe as more of a baby powder type scent. While the AOS is definitely more woodsy. No sandalwood smells the same to me. My Proraso sandalwood smells different than the other two. You have to experiment and try out samples to find out what sandalwood suits your nose.

I had the Proraso Sandalwood, but I traded it for a MMBT. It lathered well, but it was a little irritating to my face. It was a good trade. I may try the TOBS Sandalwood.
I got TABAC in a trade, too. I have learned to really like the smell. It lathers great and performs great.

That's because actual sandalwood was so popular that it's now a threatened species. Anything made from real sandalwood is extremely expensive. So sandalwood scents vary by manufacturer and are all just interpretations of actual sandalwood. There are a handful of trees and plants that are used to make up what we call sandalwood.

The Wiki explains it much better.

You are going to get a different answer from everyone. As they say YMMV. I like TOBS products, but hate there sandalwood scent. Doesn't smell anything like sandalwood to me. More like a somewhat unpleasant perfume. I like AOS, Proraso, and Saint Charles Shave sandalwood scents. I've tried Gft, EJ, Parker, Mama Bear and I have a sample of SRD sandalwood in the queue. AOS is my favorite and TOBS is my least favorite. I did try. Bought a tub, used it about three times. I wanted to like it. Just couldn't make it happen. They do have a full line of products, shampoo, deodorant, bath soap, aftershave, etc. So if you do like it you will be all set. Do yourself a favor and buy a sample of it before you commit to a tub. If I'm not mistaken the Shave Den Shop, Maggard Razors and Garry's Sample Shop all sell TOBS samples. Good luck.

TOBS sandalwood cream was my first real shaving cream and I still enjoy it very much. I also have AOS sandalwood cream and Catie's Bubbles sandalwood soap. While no two sandalwood creams or soaps smell the same, the AOS sandalwood cream and Catie's Bubbles sandalwood soap are more similar in scent than the TOBS. The TOBS sandalwood cream has more of babershop type smell. My wife really likes it when I use it but she also likes the AOS sandalwood. She should since it was a gift from her. Scents are such a YMMV thing. I believe Maggards has samples available so that might be the way to go.

You can get samples of the TOBS creams at maggards. They are good for about 4 shaves. I really like the TOBS but haven't tried the AOS yet. I am working through all of my samples but I will be getting a tub of the TOBS sandalwood for sure. Its a keeper in scent and performance. really easy to lather for me.

You can also get samples at the TSD Shop, AND support our great forum.

That is true, and the TOBS are cheaper on TSD than MR. I just wanted to use as many acronyms as possible there. I am probably going to order some samples from TSD just to compare the sizes against Maggards. I am on a sample kick lately. I feel a lot less guilty using a sample I don't like once as opposed to an entire tub that I would feel obligated to use.

Thanks for the info. Until now, I didn't know TSD offered cream samples.

They are about the same size. TSD 1/4oz. Most of the Maggards samples were 1/4oz. A few were 10ml which is about 1/3oz. I think
