Hi All I’ve been a member here for about ten years but have been quiet for a while. I had a great collection of shave gear, but lost almost all of it a few years ago. I moved and a few boxes were stolen, including the one with my shave stuff. With time and money being in short supply while raising two kids I just let things roll at that point. Thank goodness that the only razor I really had a sentimental connection to was in my hotel room with me. It’s my birth year 1967 Gillette Super Speed. It’s the same razor my father had and the first one I purchased when I started wet shaving. I want to start getting some more products again and have some Stirling Soap and a few aftershaves on order. Looking for recommendations on what’s new in good quality adjustable razors, or if I should just go with an adjustable fat boy or something. For razors, I don’t mind buying used and any shopping recommendations would be appreciated. Assuming EBay and the classifieds here are still the go to places. I have a tough beard and sensitive skin, so I like an adjustable on mild and a feather blade when I slack on shaving and let it get too long. The Super Speed with Silver/Blue blades is great when I stay on top of it, but gets rough otherwise. So looking for recommendations on a good adjustable that won’t break the bank and good prices on Feather blades. I will add a pic of the current, sad state of my Den lol. Going to rebuild it and will keep this updated so you all can follow along and hopefully provide advice as needed.
I personally enjoy my Fatboy and Rockwell 6s. Like you I prefer a mild razor but very sharp blades. For reference, what price range are you looking for?
Hi Stan, I don't have a budget per se. I did find out on my last buying spree ten years ago that expensive razors were not necessarily giving me better shaves. I'm looking for good quality, but it does not have to be something for professional SOTD photo shoots. I may pick up an old adjustable and want a decent new one as well. I do travel for work and want something that works well but won't be a major heartbreak if it gets lost or stolen when traveling. I have been unhappily resorting to disposables on trips due to not wanting to risk the above mentioned Super Speed...
1967 my b-year also.sorry for your loss of gear.i enjoy and collect/use gillettes.ebay, antique shops, etsy TSD members have supplied me well over the years.love the superspeed.good luck with your new purchases.while fatboys have risen in price they can be still affordable.i would look for a mint /clean b-year slim adjustable.
Look at the Schick Injectors also, they handle a multi day beard quite easily. My favorite Superspeed is my 1955 Redtip with a Gillette Yellow loaded. Always a smooth, comfortable shave. Sent from my SM-A526U using Tapatalk
Ha! Don't start me down the rabbit hole just yet! I had a great set of Shick Injectors. Super sharp but not a perfect match for me. A bit too lightweight. They were really good for mowing down that vacation beard though. I was to the point where I even had a Mongoose. That thing was too much, even for me. If I lost concentration for even a second it would take chunks out of my face.
Nice thing about the Schicks is that they are still fairly inexpensive, and they always deliver a smooth shave. Same goes for the Gem Single Edge Razors. Sent from my SM-A526U using Tapatalk
As for an adjustable ...... I enjoy a Fat Boy on occasion, but to be quite honest about 10 months ago I tried a Merkur Progress and since then I've rarely used anything else. I enjoy the weight and the true adjustability from lamb gentle all the way up to cat skinner. Feel free to PM me with any questions.
My favorite inexpensive razors for travelling (and at home) are the Weishi 9306 (from China/AE/Amazon - not the VDH clone which is a tad milder it seems and usually more expensive) for around ten bucks and the Lord L5 (Tech clone) - around 5-8 bucks.
I will check them out. A serviceable $10 razor is just what I need for travel. I can add it to my $5 tub of Ark and the cheap old brush. Can’t wait to toss the disposables for good.
As promised, here is the current state of my den. Good news is I already have new supplies rolling in Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That's a good start, @SDK . I would buy vintage. One at a time. Fatboys have been going for cheap, on EBay lately. I have picked up several for between $15-$30. They needed replating, but that was what I was looking for. I sent them off to different plating services, for comparisons. They are now better looking than new. So, that is one option. Also, the Slim Adjustables are going for dirt cheap. But, as always, timing is everything on eBay.
I have some other items that have been coming in but wanted to give a big thank you to @swarden43 for sending me this generous care package and handwritten note. This site has always had the best people. As I sort everything out again, I will eventually be doing a "Thank you Steve" PIF to keep the generosity moving forward....
