Boy do I feel like a sucker. I recently purchased a '66 and a '67 Gillette adjustable on e-bay in what I would say are good shape. I paid about $65 for the two ...In my post as a newbie I asked about how to restore razors. I got a lot of great tips to include scrubbing bubbles and Mother's Mag Polish. Last week I picked up a couple of unknown Gillettes (I'll ask for help identifying them later ) for $10 for the two at an antique store. They were kind of nasty but for $10, right? A little scrubbing bubbles, boiling water and mother's mag and they are as good if not better than the ones from e-bay (pictures are forthcoming ). No more e-bay for me. Thanks for all the tips
Nice! Just DO NOT BOIL gold plated razors; it'll take the finish off. Also, do not boil razors that have plastic, for obvious reasons.
Be "VERY" careful about boiling any razor, actually it best "NOT" to boil any razor. I've found just using very hot water(boil the water if you want, then pour it over the razor in another container) with Dawn dish deteregent,"LET IT SOAK" till the water cools, repeat if you feel it's neccesary, gentle scrub with a soft toothbrush(toothpick/q-tip for tight areas), then a good spray with Scrubbing Bubbles let sit, then another gentle scrub, dry competely and polish with Mother Mag Polish or something similar thats not overly abrasive..This has worked for me. The Scrubbing Bubles helps sanitize the razor... Remember with gold razors they(Gilletes at least) are coated with lacquer to help protect the gold plating, so it's not only the gold you need to worry about, but also if possible not taking off the lacquer....
Ebay has its place. Sometimes you'll find something really special that it would take years to find locally. Don't count it out. The trick is to decide what an item is worth to you, set your price and stick to your guns. Don't get caught up in auction fever. Also, do your homework first so that your price isn't more than you would have to spend elsewhere. Check the B/S/T, also. It's great to buy an item from someone who knows what it's worth and cares for it. (Also, unless you feel the need to keep them all, put two of them back on Ebay and recover some or all of your money!)
This is gonna sound really dumb but I only know how to buy on e-bay never sold anything there but that is a good idea
Same here. Doesn't sound dumb to me at all......On ebay I'm a Past Master at buying..Selling I know "ABSOLUTELY" nothing about....
Never say never about ebay.... Also $65 for two Slims isn't a ripoff, you might have gotten them cheaper, but that takes "ALOT" of time, hunting and/or luck....Most razors found "in the wild" will be cheaper than those found on ebay, plus those on ebay are much of the time sold by people who know what the market for that razor is..Plus the shipping usually is more than the sales tax..So don't feel like you got a bad deal I.M.O. you didn't,depending of course on the condition of the razor of course...whenever you deal on ebay researching the item you want to buy is "VERY" important, making a BIN(buy it now) offer to the seller before the first bid is made and ASK, ASK,ASK the seller or other TSD members any question you can think of, even obvious ones!!!
