A number of the members of the HYD thread have decided to organize a PIF in honor and loving memory of everybody's friend, Rolls. The shave products (and other goodies) that comprise this PIF represent some of his favorite shave goods (with a couple tricks and extras added in for good measure).

The items in this PIF are as follows:
    AOS Soap
    Astra Superior DE Blades
    Aqua Velva
    Aqua Velva Ice Balm
    De Vergulde Hand Shave Soap
    Gillette Fat Handle Tech Razor
    Injector
    Musgo Real Shave Cream
    Noxema Lather Shave
    Palmolive Cream
    Tin of Tuna
    Cadbury Mini Eggs
$20 Gift Cert for TSD store
    TSD Red Cream

But how do you enter this PIF? Of course, Rolls wasn't known well by everyone, so instead of asking something about him, we have decided to request those interested in taking part in this PIF to write and post a short essay indicating what The Shave Den means to them and how it has affected them, helped them out, etc.

We'd like this to go to an active member, so there will be a requirement for entrants to have at least 50 posts as of today (May 19 2009) [slash]and to have been a registered TSD member since February 23rd or before. Unfortunately, because of the aftershaves, this PIF is only open to members in the Continental US.[/slash]

This is now open to all members around the world as well as members who previously did not qualify because of time requirements. If we cannot ship aftershave to you, we will work something out.

Rolls passed on the 23rd of March. The PIF will be closed on the 23rd of May.

We'll stay off your lawn while sucking eggs, Rolls.

Summary: As long as you have 50 posts as of the 19th of May, just respond to this thread with a statement about what The Shave Den means to you and you will be considered for the prize.

I don't wanna have to go suck eggs, so here's an entry.

I came to TSD the beginning of February. I had picked up a Gillette razor at a second hand store and got a puck of VDH Deluxe, a Burma Shave brush off the clearance isle shelves and a package of US Personna blades, all from Walmart. I got it all home and had no clue what to do next. I decided to surf the internet for information. I came across a couple of forums and lurked around for a while, reading and watching. I decided to join TSD.

I discovered I had a Gillette Tech and I needed to learn to build a decent lather in the tea mug from my kitchen. I tried the upside down lathering like Mantic did and my soap fell out and hit my foot. While I was cussing and getting my VDH out from behind the toilet, a few forum members PIFed me some blades, cream samples, soap samples, and filled me full of advice on what to do with it all. My mom gave me grampa’s bar handle NEW, and I discovered OC razors. The teeth worried me and I had heard that OCs were aggressive and hard to use. One of the members gave me words of
encouragement, and I went ahead and used it and found a great way to shave. A couple of weeks later, I got a Gem Micromatic and was all worried about using that razor a few called "face shredder". That same member passed out more encouragement and once again, all turned out well. Had it not been for TSD, I wouldn’t have ventured even half as far into wetshaving as I have. I may not have tried it at all, actually. The support offered by members here has been unbelievable. I asked a bunch of silly newbie questions that I know TSD members answer at least 4 times a month. They answered each and every one with courtesy and respectfully. I still have to ask a silly newbie question now and then. I’ve made some great friends, had a lot of laughs and learned more about shaving here that I would have ever known by trial and error. Having a friend here get a nice, minty razor is almost as good as getting it myself. I know it got a good home and is appreciated for the quality shaving tool it is. The folks in the HYD thread are some great guys and gals. Not only do they enable and feed the ADs, they offer emotional support when you are having a crappy day, and just make you feel at home. The discussions and reviews have helped me make decisions about what products to look for and a few to avoid. I enjoy seeing pics of the items other members are making and repairing. There are some awesome and creative people here at TSD, and I'm proud to say I know them.

I didn’t get a chance to get to know Rolls too well before he passed on. I missed the one about the giant hamster. I was there in the forum the day he set his truck on fire and was going out with hotdogs when the fire truck pulled in. It's sad when they fine you 5K for hosting a wiennie roast. We'd have bailed you out of jail, Rolls, Honest! :D It was Rolls who suggested I try the Astra Superior Platinum blades. Thanks Rolls, they have worked out just like you said. I loved your sig line:

When I was young I was called a rugged individualist. :signs120 When I was in my fifties I was considered eccentric. whacky097 Here I am doing and saying the same things I did then and I'm labeled senile............ :happy093

    Be BBS and RIP, Rolls

I am not eligable to win this at all, but want to say a few things anyway.

I always enjoyed talking to Rolls. Just seeing some of the stuff he was talking about brought many and I mean Many a smile to my face. I was there for the great hampster hunt, and for the wennie roast that MsB speaks of. I miss him everyday.

I found this place awhile back, and kinda melded in with some of the crowd that came from another site. The same site that I moved on from. I have tried to help out with new people as much as I can.

While a member here I was PIF'd several SE razors . This was after I found one at my Aunts house and a certain SE Guru told me I had to give it a try. I fell in love with them, and now I am a full time SE enabler.

This forum had allowed me to make many friends that share this strange and wonderful hobby. I am daily reminded of how good people around here are to each other. I am specially close to my friends in the HYD thread. That little insane world is a laugh a minute most days.

To sum it up,.... My name is Calvin..... and I am a shave addict.

I'm way too new to know anything about this guy, but I very much picture my grandpa from what I've seen. I am glad to see so many people paying their respects, though I never knew him.

    yup........
that's the point, you don't have to have known him.
carefully read the rules for the PIF, it wouldn't be fair to have everyone say something about someone they didn't know.
the tie to him is all the products and equipment he loved and encouraged us to try
this is in no way limited to only "friends of Rolls", in fact, quite the opposite

I'll probably give it a go too, when it gets closer to ending time. May 23rd is still a long ways away for me.

    Anyway, this'll bump it again...:D

I think you should move the requirement of membership back to March 17th.

Yep, what he said! I may type a few words and enter myself, but want to bump this up so others see it.

There's a lot of great stuff in this PIF and a lot of good vibes. I'd encourage folks to have a go at it.

    Cheers,
    Tom

    Well, here goes.

I've been a wet shaver since the early 1990's when I was a Brother in a Benedictine Monastery. I was in our supply room getting toothpaste and spied an Old Spice mug, Colgate soap, and a brush. My razor then was my trusty Atra Plus and I sure noticed the difference the soap and brush made in my shaves. Now, more than 15 years later and I'm no longer a monk (quite the opposite: married with four daughters), I am still a wetshaver, and now, thanks to TSD a confirmed DE shaver.

I didn't get into DE shaving until shortly before I found TSD. I was thinking about it and doing research when I found TSD. The advice and encouragement the wonderful members of this board have been a big help to me in the past 9 months. The fact that the conversations sometimes dip into other non-shaving topics of interest to gentlemen is a huge bonus. Also, this is a wonderful site for learning some good, and not so good jokes! :happy102

I can't say I knew Rolls all that well, I've been here just long enough to have been fortunate enough to read maybe twenty or so of his posts before his passing. I had no idea his age except it was easy to guess he was at least a senior citizen or a victim of early onset Curmudgeon disease.

All I knew was that I always enjoyed his posts and got a kick out of them. There are a few names on here that I always will gravitate toward and his was one of them. If I saw a post or thread with his name I would be sure to read it and I was very saddened when I read of his passing.

As to what TSD has meant to me, well it's kind of opened my eyes up to a whole new world. I've been wetshaving for a long time and always wondered who else was buying those Williams and VDH shaving soaps and the Palmolive creams etc from the drug store not to mention the brushes.

I had no idea there were this many people out there using brush and soap or cream. I concenrate on that area because I'm not a DE shaver, the brush and cream has been and still is the important part to me. The first time I ever had a Barber (more years ago than I like to think of) put brush and soap to my neck to shave my hairline I knew I wanted that feeling on my face.

That was before the internet and I had no idea how to replicate that or where to get a brush and what kind of soap to use till Gillette came out with a little package called the "Brush Plus" shaving system. I bought one and was hooked and used it for years. Even though it was a synthetic brush it got the job done and when they discontinued it I bought a bunch of them and used them first with Palmolive creams and then later with the Williams and VDH till I bought a VDH brush at the drugstore.

But I digress, like I said I had no idea there were so many people enjoying shaving as much as I do, most men I know seem to view it as a "chore" and finding TSD and getting to know a group of people who while we don't agree on everything (like DE razors for one) all agree that we love our shave!

So TSD has been a very positive experience for me and while time doesn't permit me be here all that often I do check in whenever I can and always enjoy seeing what other folk have to say about their shaving tools and experiences.

Have a great day all and RIP Rolls, you are very much missed.
