I've been shaving my head for years now, and switched from my Mach III to a double-edge about two months ago. I was butchering myself with a Merkur Futur, and almost gave up. Then I switched to a Merkur long-handled classic and found that I get a great head shave.

Here's the question: I like the weight of my Futur and love the shave on my face. I really want to use it on my head, but for some reason I can't use it without slicing myself. Even dialed all the way down to one, it doesn't do the job as well as my Classic. What's the difference between the Classic and the Futur that's causing the problem?

I'm strictly a vintage Gillette person myself, but I would guess it has to do with the weight of the razor head. The skin on the human head is less sensitive than the face so you may be applying too much pressure with the Futur without even noticing. Maybe if you consciously back off a bit it may be less "abusive".

The proper angle can be difficult to maintain on parts of your head with a DE. I make sure to use a "used" DE blade; the hairs on your head are rather easily mowed down. I finally ended up using an Injector E3 and found it a lot easier to keep the proper angles and pressure.

For my head, the free Fusion that can in the mail months ago does the job in good order. Easy to use, no nicks and a blade lasts about 6 weeks.

I just started using a Gillette Tech to shave my head and it's going splendidly. I've only done it twice so far, but no problems whatsoever. It takes a tick longer, but I enjoy the shave much more. I'm already wondering how a straight-edge would operate. A whole new ball game I imagine.

Ahhh, it's good to be back to the Fusion. Faster, cleaner, SAFER! Still sticking with T&F oil and TAOS cream, though.

I'm new to DE shaving, but would not dare use it for my head shaving (too chicken). I use the headblade razor (found at headblade.com) and love it. On my lazy day I will use my Braun Cruzer3.

Welcome. i dont head shave, but the headblade is beloved by many. The Zook is selling some collectible headblades down in the classifieds.

I agree with this - the first two times I shaved my head with the Futur it got shredded. I eased up and put no pressure on, just guided the razor (use the Force Luke!) and it's a cinch now!
