So I am embarking on a new challenge. @jgreenepa asked me if I could take a look at his F. I agreed to see what I could do.

The spring is bent way out of shape and the guard bar is loose. I first tried to see if I could bond the guard on. No luck it did not hold. Looking inside the razor. I could see that there are 2 tabs that secure the guard to the razor. These are loose.

The only way forward is to take the razor apart. I will need to drill out the 2 rivets to remove the top spring. That way I can get a good look at how the guard actually fits.

If I can fix the Guard. I will be able to do a much better job massaging the spring into shape. I will then turn up some new rivets to reset the spring. I will clean and polish the razor some to spruce it up.

This razor is VERY sentimental to Jeff. So I am honored to be able to try and get it back to shaving form.

I have a Type F with a similar, but smaller issue. I think the damage occured when someone tried to pry the blade out, rather than injecting a new blade to get the old one out.

    Subscribed.

I will start on Monday. I do know now that the rivets are stainless steel. So I will make new ones from that.

Well I spent 30 careful minutes grinding the rivet heads down. Only had a couple of grinder nicks on the spring. They will polish out. Everything came apart fine. Next I will take back to work and very carefully drill out the rest of the rivets.

Did a little tinkering at lunch. They are not rivets. They are machine screws with a unique head. The thread size is 3-48. I will purchase some brass button head screws.
I am running into problems getting the bar guard to lock into position. There is missing material on the underside of the handle that helps hold it. I will have to do some thinking on this.

Tom, is that missing material due to corrosion?

Yes it is. The cast Aluminum appears to be fairly impure. I think I will have to use JB weld and hope for the best. I will scuff the surfaces and grind rough. I hope that will be enough to bond.

i have used it on threaded applications like aluminum intake manifold repairs.as long as it isn't a moving high stress item.

J.B. Weld should do the job.
