Pardon the newbie question. But what is the difference between a shaving scuttle and a regular shaving mug? Thanks in advance. Regards, Michael
Mugs are generally used for soaking your brush, or storing/using soaps... Scuttles are generally used for heating the brushes bristles and or lather depending on which scuttle is being used.
Welcome to TSD! This is the best wet shave board on the planet! There are two different kinds of scuttles. One is purely for soaps, where the soap puck sits on top of a mug and has drain holes under the soap puck, while there is a tank under the puck that holds hot water. I think that the soap scuttles are more for face or bowl lathering. Think of a "Moss" Scuttle as a mug within a mug that can be used to develop creams or soaps into lather. The outside shell holds hot water to keep the inside shell hot, keeping your lather warm. Here are some pictures. The first one is a soap type scuttle, the other is a "Moss" type scuttle, named after the guy that came up with the idea (IIRC)
The second one is a Georgetown G4 not even related to a Moss... :happy102 The Moss scuttle was originally intended to be used to hold a lathered brush for face lathers and keep it warm, the G4 was a move towards bowl lathers to keep lather and keep said lather warm. *edit* for clarification
Firstly, :signs046 personally, I use a huge coffee mug to store and create a lather from soaps! ---> My Morning Mug <---
....then there are simply bowls. I turn my own bowls, seal them with polyacrylic and dedicate a particular soap to that bowl. Currently in the works is a cocobolo wood bowl with a nifty lip on it. I've turned the outside on the lathe already, I'm hogging out the inside right now. I'm thinking of facetting the outside bottom so the facets merge up into the turned part of the bowl...kind of a little different effect. Bowl blanks are relatively cheap, the fun is in the turning. bill
I was wondering about this to, thankyou guys for the info. Also, it's cool that you make your own bowls. '
