I'm looking for some pointers on cleaning my brush. I have no idea how to go about doing so. Also, how often should it be done?
Check this out from Em's Place. My brush gets cleaned every time it hits the soap Seriously, though, how often you clean is up to you. I find cream will build up scum faster than soap. Hard water is going to play a factor, as well. How much build up are you willing to deal with before you feel you need to clean your brush? Only you know what you're willing to accept as "clean".
Pretty much what Steve said, if I fan my brush and it emits a giant dust cloud, I will generally go and clean it.
