Hello all, I have been using the Semogue 1460 Boar for about a month now and thought I would post my thoughts on my reviews. I am debating reviewing everything in my den. Not sure if it will be helpful or just annoying haha. Anyway, here is my review. I got this brush from Maggard on a Black Friday clearance for $10. Regularly, you can get it for around $15. A little more expensive than Omega brushes, but in my opinion much better. The brush has a painted handle that has a good weight to it. No cheap plastic handles like the once found on Omega brushes. Don't get me wrong, I like Omega brushes and think they have their place in the brush market, but when a Semogue is this cheap, there really is no comparison. The brush is also PACKED with boar bristles. Through the break in, I lost less than 10 bristles easily, maybe less than 5. They are secured very well. The knot is 21mm, which some might think is small, however it still whips up a fantastic lather. There is a fantastic amount of backbone which makes it great for face lathering and bowl lathering. I have broken in this brush (has close to 20 shaves with it) and it keeps getting softer with every use, but still keeping the backbone. Semogue brushes also splay out and look awesome when bloomed. Overall, for the price, this is my favorite brush. I will probably pick up a second one just to have around and use for travel. I will have to get a Semogue OC boar next to try Here are some pics:
Michael that's a great write up. Thank you for taking the time. Love the brush, the colors really pop and the shape is nice.
Yeah dude, do it. I love my SOC. It and a Vulfix 404 are the only two brushes I've used in the last year with the exception of maybe once when I used a silvertip. I have had many vintage boars and an Omega and I agree with you on Semogue. They are top notch. Omega is good too, but Semogue just seems a bit more refined.
No, not entirely. The handle is a big deal to me because this brush feels super premium compared to Omega. Also, my Omega brush shed wayyy more hairs than the Semogue did. The Omega lost 15 hairs or more and still losing them, where my Semogue was close to 5. Another reason I prefer Semogue is they pack a ton more hairs into the brushes. I'll try to get a pic but you can see gaps between hairs on Omega brushes and not on Semogue.
I don't have an Omega, by my Semogue boar lost maybe a dozen hairs over the last 8 months. It's a dense brush with good backbone. It was broken in after a dozen uses and is my favorite brush. I like the Semogue boar brushes.
I haven't tried nearly all boar brushes out there or even as many as I want to try (which is all of them) but I think I may agree with you. Mine is ridiculously soft and as close to perfect as I've used. It is just a nice thing. I'm rarely contented by stuff, and I am wholly content with it; no gripes, no desires....Goldilocks. And welcome to The Shave Den!
You're absolutely right about the 1460 - just a great little brush. Since I got my 620 I am a Semogue fan and prefer their boars over the Omega ones. I even like them better than the synthetics and most of the badgers I've had ... go figure If you want a little variation, try the Semogue 610. It is the same knot as the 1460 set into a wonderful, premium-quality acrylic handle. That's on my wishlist, along with the OC boar and the 2000. Good thing is: You can get 5 or 6 of these boars for the price of one decent badger. It is - totally different from the boars though Here's my little Semogue collection From left to right: 620, 1460, 1305 and the Owners Club Badger I got for Christmas
Nice review. I had the same handle in the 1520 with 75% extras in the knot. I really liked it as well although the one you have here is supposed to be even better, more soft.
Thanks Michael for the review. I have yet to add a boar to my den but think I might do so soon. Still conflicted between the Semogue and Omega though.
I'm not an expert. but, I think it may take longer than a month to break-in your boar brush. the good news is, if you love it now, it only gets better. it takes some time for the ends of the boar bristles to split. while the smell goes first, then it softens, but it really gets nice when the ends split. mine was in rotation, so it took about 4 months for both of my semouge brushes to blossom into the wild little flowers they've become. I think Gary said it was the repeated drying that caused the ends to split. so, good tidings to yours, hope it gets even better.
Cool description "blossom into the wild little flowers". It is neat to see the Semogue boar bristle ends split as you use them. A badger is a badger, is a badger, is a badger. It is what you get out of the box. However, the boars continue to evolve and split as you use them..
