Do you guys do anything special to preserve the 'Excelsior' stickers on the Semogue brushes? It seems that without covering them with varnish or something similar they will eventually fall off. Alex
You could try the super glue method that straight razor restorers use. Cut the finger off of a latex glove, put it on, and squirt a little super glue onto the tip. Spread it out over the surface you want to preserve. Let it dry and repeat. It its good enough for exotic wood straight razor scales, I don't see why it wouldn't work on the handle of a shave brush.
Do you mean epoxy glue? I have used some kinds of superglue that turned opaque when it dried, and those would obviously not be suitable in this case. Alex
Nope, a lot of the straight shaver guys use just plain old super glue. Its waterproof and dries clear.
You had better spread it very very quickly. Don't let the latex linger on the spot. I had super glue (CA glue) stick a latex glove to acrylic. CA glue will glue fingers together. Best to experiment first on something you don't care about. Anybody who has not worked with CA glue to get a gloss finish on pens or other items might be better off to use clear nail polish. Its a clear plastic film decal. It should be somewhat waterprooof. You may be better off applying glue underneath if it starts to peel off. I was able to peel this one off the original handle and add a little silicone glue to get it to stick to the new handle.
I have to agree with the nail polish. I didn't even think about that for some completely unknown reason. Thanks for throwing that in guys
By the way, why do Semogue brushes have a logo on them that says Excelsior (while there is nothing that says Semogue)? Is it an old name for the company, or is it a specific series of brushes? Alex
This is taken from B&B: Mr. Gomes (Semogue's owner and master craftsman) resurrected the Excelsior name that his father used over 50 years ago.
CA is notoriously crappy in applications where water is present. I restore old fountain pens, and while CA works for some things, anywhere that ink is present (section, feed), CA just won't hold up. Liquids will slowly break it down. I'd use clear nail polish if I felt the need to use anything. So far (just a few days), the decal on my Semogue 2000 hasn't budged.
Tom, I concur. I've had my Semogues (a 1305 and a 2000) for a couple of months now and the labels haven't budged.
I just wish I had known about the sticker on my Omega! I thought it was a decal --- until it came off. I picked up some clear nail polish to be ready for my next one!
