I'm watching the aftermath of the 6.0 this morning and still waiting to hear back from friends who live down there. How are TSD bay area peeps? Everyone okay?
My wife and daughter felt it, I didn't. Looks like 3 people in critical condition, lots of property damage.
Most of the damage/harm seems to be located about 45 minutes north of the SF Bay area—in Napa county.
It did wake me up - it was pretty noticeable here in SF - but I must admit I simply mumbled something and went back to sleep. Sounds like Napa got hit bad I read there's a 54% chance we'll see another one w/in the following 7 days.
Of course I sympathize with those who were injured and lost property. My thoughts and prayers are with them, but finding humor in the face of disaster is cathartic.
Hang in there. Still think it is the one of the most beautiful places in the US, even though I was in Monterey on October 17th, 1989. Scared the bejeebus out of me.
This is a reminder to have emergency supplies ready for the next one. This PSA brought to you by Geritol.
Yeah, everything I saw this morning seemed to be showing the Napa area as the most affected, but they'd show all kinds of damage and just ID it as the bay area, which is huge. Glad the TSD peeps are all accounted for!
I live about 60 miles South of Napa on the San Francisco Peninsula. I awoke to minor shaking that grew much stronger within seconds. My bedroom dresser was rolling back and forth and everything was shaking pretty hard. That was the same way the 1989 Loma Prieta quake started out, and I was hoping this one would not get any stronger. Thankfully, it did not. It must have been exponentially worse in Napa. A neighbor said that there were huge waves in her pool and a lot of water sloshed out. Some buildings in the Napa area were heavily damaged, but they will only show the worst of it on TV. It makes it look like Napa was wiped off the face of the earth and Mt. Konocti erupted, when the truth is quite different. After all, they can't keep eyeballs glued to the screen by showing a house with only a crack in the wall or no damage at all. It was still a violent quake, though, and there was a lot of damage. From the TV helicopter footage, it looked like the worst damage was to unreinforced masonry (i.e. brick) buildings. There is a reason there are precious few brick buildings in California.
It's made out of grapes, they will grow more. It is just about time to harvest and press the grapes now. Besides, California now has lots of other regions where wine is produced. We won't even come close to running out of wine.
Although we got rolled around a bit - my wife and I are fine - and there was no damage. I live in Sonoma County and all the destruction happened in Napa County.
Hoping our SF area posters are all well & praying for those who have been hurt. We narrowly missed it, having just gotten back from a trip there. We landed in SF last Saturday (8/23) but drove south to Paso Robles for a few days. On Tuesday (8/26) we drove up to SF.
