Recently my lovely little girlfriend has been going out to "pottery class" well a light bulb went off and I asked her if they carried scuttles. Sadly they don't but their in the process of finding some to stock. I thought she could paint me one up one night while she went and enjoyed her pottery class night. Well she talked me into just going with her, lol here I am the only guy in the room painting pottery . But I must say I enjoyed it and have started my own little project. You don't go to pottery and make a bowl or scuttle, everything is pre made just ready for your artistic abilities to be painted into them. So I found a nice bowl with a pedestal to hold onto while whipping lather into it. I've seen this design in shave bowls before, the pottery lady said it was a "ice cream bowl" but I nodded my head and proceeded to see a sweet shaving bowl . Here is the start of what I got done this evening I thought I would share. I started in the inside by adding dots to make a good rough surface to whip up lather faster and more efficient. Next class time I just need colors picked out and some kind of classic design to paint onto it. I'll keep this thread updated on progress and here is the work so far!
Cool idea and perfect style bowl. I've gone with the wife a couple times to paint stuff. In fact we still have a spoon rest that we painted together back in 2004 when we were still dating.
It's pretty fun and even better I can spend a little time with her in the process! Me either my friend! We should be going back out there Friday so I will have more updates that evening!
i am thinking something dark for sure, just cant decide what colors! i been looking all over the internet haha i want something classic but different. I might even try to incorperate some kind of cool design on the side of it as well. I told my girlfriend i should do a grape vine all the way around but i got the look of "mmmm maybe you shouldnt" lol! but she's probably right i need to use this one as a learning curve haha. The Dots are actually the paint that you use to paint over the clay. Its a real chalky paint and heeds to the clay really well, when it dries it basically becomes just like the clay. To make the dots onto the clay you just have a little squeeze bottle that you can control the tip of it to get the right size dot each time.
Here is the results after tonight's pottery class date with the girlfriend! I couldn't decide on exactly what to do for color so I came up with this. I have always been intrigued by the Crusades during the Middle Ages and the choice of colors the Christian army's wore during this time period. My favorite was the red and white. The red and white shield with a Cross is something that stands out to me as well. So here's my theme/colors for my shaving bowl . I did do the inside were the dots are in a black that I made lighter and darker in spots. It looked like it contrast well with the theme of an iron shield. The shield itself was fun but time consuming to do this evening. Here some photos and I hope you guys enjoy! Tomorrow night I will finish it up and then off for it to be put in a kiln to be fired!
That is really neat. I am sometimes 'forced' to go to one if those make-your-own-pottery places. Kerry might know which one I'm talking about as its in Willow Glen. Just can't remember it's name. Anyway, now I might actually have something to do there instead of wishing I was somewhere else
If you have the opportunity to go, i would do it! Its not bad at all lol specially when you can make something for shaving! The place i go to is pretty limited on what kind of bowls and things they have. The place around you might actually carry scuttles and such, even better if you can make your own piece instead of being pre made like mine was.
I finished up the shaving bowl Saturday evening after work! The nice lady said it should be ready to pick up by this coming Saturday! Ill be sure to post photos of the finished product!
Well im a bit dissapointed today, the pottery lady from the studio said she couldn't get my ("ice cream bowl" <---- lol) into the Kiln this weekend so it looks like it will be next Tuesday . She has had alot of people as of late painting there own pieces so its understandable. I believe one of her kilns has actually broke as well so shes doing it all out of one kiln. But on a good note i should have it in time for my day off shave on Wednesday! Wanted to keep you guys updated, for those that was curious of the outcome!
