For you guys who prefer the old-fashioned shave cream and brush, do you do so because of the nostalgic factor of doing it the old school way, or is this worth the extra effort over cream from a can? I use the plain old supermarket shaving cream from a can, because I figure its a lot faster and more convenient. Since I shave both my mug and my nugget every day, I'm already spending about 15 minutes shaving. So, is the quality of the shave cream worth the extra time and effort of using the brush and whipping up your own shave cream?
I find it more beneficial. the scent for one is a plus because you don't have many options with the cans. I also find it better for my skin as they tend to have better ingredients than cans and they produce a lot less waste (cans in the landfill) there is a nostalgic factor in there as well but it doesn't take very long to whip up a good lather and it is a moment of peace and aromatherapy.
I think the cream and brush works better. Plus most creams are made from better ingredients then the canned foam.
I'm a newbie at DE shaving and have a little trouble with my "lather" building technique so I have been switching back and forth between shave in a can and shaving soap. The shave with the soap is a lot better! Smoother shave and closer with better feeling face afterwards.
Nostalgia. I take anywhere from 30 to 40 minutes from start to the end of clean up. I have no desire to shorten my ME time.
Better from a soap or cream with a brush. Better cushion, better glide, better afterward, nostalgia you pick it it is better. I catch my own badger and make my own soap before going back to a can. I ditched the can for a lotion and I thought that was a giant step better. Brush? Soap or cream with a brush makes the lotion step look like a two year olds step.
Well, looks like the consensus here is that it is more efficient for a close, comfortable shave. Maybe I'll give it a try. I suffer from anosmia, so I have no sense of smell, rendering the aromatherapy a non-issue for me.
I like my soaps and creams mostly due to the varied scents and the satisfaction and fun of working up a good lather, but if it's necessary to use a "superior" cream/brush in order to achieve a good shave with a safety razor, that really means a safety razor is no better or even less efficient/more damaging than a cartridge. If you can use an off-the-shelf gel or foam with a cartridge, you should be able to do the same with a safety razor with no irritation. I never understood the mantra of aftershave splashes or balms when it comes to safety razor shaving when nobody mentions them as necessary after a cartridge shave. I never used an aftershave when I shaved with cartridges. I rinsed and I was done. Why is it considered an essential step with safety razors to "soothe, calm and tone" the skin post-shave? If you're tearing your face up enough with a safety razor to require an aftershave treatment to soothe your skin, you're not performing a good shave in the first place. Yeah, the smell is nice, but cologne does the same thing. Your face should not be irritated and need to be "soothed" or "healed" after shaving with a DE razor.
I use aftershave to disinfect my skin after having scraped it all over with a super sharp scraper (Shaving) to prevent infection, esp. infected air follicles. Works for me.
I dunno. In nearly 40 years of shaving I've never experienced any kind of face or hair follicle infection after shaving and not using aftershave, myself. Guess I was just lucky.
I'm partial to shave soap and brush. I was running late and used can cream, and even with a new blade, I felt like I was shaving with sandpaper.
For me, the brush feels good on my face, and makes the soap/cream more efficient than the canned goo at standing my beard up to face execution under the razor. I'll shave with a disposable if I absolutely have to, but don't take away my shaving brush.
My morning face shaves take about 5 minutes with a brush and soap. My evening head shaves take about 10 minutes with a brush and soap. I don't shave my head every day, more like every other day, so the time spent shaving is negligible in the grand scheme of the week. Even when I am in a hurry it doesn't take much time to whip up a quick face lather and be good to go.
Canned stuff has so many irritants which can wreak havoc on sensitive skin. The two or three times in my entire life which I tried it were a disaster for me.
I have a friend who uses canned shave foam to remove grease stains from clothing. I am hard-pressed to imagine that this stuff is good for your skin.
I prefer the brush with real soap or cream to the canned shave cream. After making the change my skin is in much better shape. My work morning shave takes at most 10 minutes including clean up.
I would give it a try it can't hurt. you can pick up a brush razor and soap fairly cheap depending on the kind you get. I have found that I get a much closer shave than I did with cartridge razor and canned goo but that's just my experience. if you decide you find that you don't like im sure someone would be willing to buy the gear off you.
I use the brush and soaps for this same reason. It may all be in my head, but it feels like my skin is healthier after I switched.
