OK, so I have my Jojoba oil (man that stuff is pricey, it's olive next time), castor oil and essential oil, ready to mix up my first batch of Sara S's world famous shave oil and pour into my...hmm. After searching the house, I don't seem to have anything to put it in.

I would like to make this stuff tomorrow, so I would prefer not to have to order from an online source. It seems dumb*, but I have no idea where to find an EMPTY bottle. Anyone know where I could find an empty bottle appropriate for shaving oil?

    Thanks in advance
    Ed

Got any after shave you don't really like? Pour it out and voila. :)

Maybe not optimal but if you have an empty prescription pill bottle or bottle with a large mouth it would work. This stuff is a little on the thick side (with olive at least) so I have to use more than a few drops to get good coverage. You could just dip a couple fingertips in the bottle and I think that would work until you find something better.

I like the pill bottle idea. Depending on how much you're making, even a ziploc container or drinking cup covered with plastic wrap could work until you find a container. I would make a small amount at first to see how you like the consistency & performance, then adjust the ingredients to your preferences before making a larger quantity. (Yes, the price of jojoba has gone up ridiculously in a couple of years).

If you decide to buy a container, the Dollar Tree or any dollar store will have lots of options in the cosmetics & kitchen sections. (Avoid the craft section where the containers aren't necessarily food-safe). Travel bottles for mouthwash would also work well.

All the chain stores will have small squeezeble bottles in the travel size products area. I bought two 3oz flip top bottles from Walmart for about a dollar each.

+1. I was going to say to look for that kind of bottle at the drugstore, but lots of large chain stores would have them too.

    As said, a travel bottle.
Or, for something a bit fancier, try a kitchen store. They always have lots of various size/shape containers.

If you want glass a grocery store has TONS of glass bottle, in different sizes, mostly round but some square also, just buy and empty out the product, clean and your done. This is what I do to get glass bottles to decant my AS into. It is kind of a waste, but still way cheaper then most any glass bottles you can order off the internet and there is no waiting for the mailman. Hope this helps.....:)

Thanks for all the input guys (in the most non gendered sense) here's the options I came up with.

So I cleaned out a 99% empty bottle of one of my favorite Mexican hot sauces. The I became afraid of burning off my face so I went to Target and got these two plastic bottles. Now I am torn, I really like the hot sauce bottle but I'm a bit worried. So far I have soaked in soapy water and washed several times. Anyone tried this before?

The hot sauce bottle is nice. You said you cleaned it well. Does it still have an aroma of hot sauce? If it does, skip it. BTW, is it glass or plastic?

It's glass, I can't smell the sauce but it is pretty hot when eaten so I'll wash it a few more times.

I might run it through the dishwasher (top shelf), if the neck isn't too thin.

A tip from my momma -- if you have any concerns about soap residue remaining in the bottle after cleaning, fill bottle with warm water & add a small amt of vinegar (1/2 tsp) & shake. You don't need much at all, so won't smell the vinegar afterwards. (If there is a smell, rinse with hot water & let air dry).

The vinegar trick also helps get food smells out of plastic food containers. Adjust amount for container size of course. (We use white vinegar for cleaning, but apple cider vinegar etc also works)

Dang, how did you get them to stick to your ceiling like that? You know that's some good oil performance & coverage when your bottle sticks to the ceiling.

Just kiddin, maybe try running the hot sauce bottle through the dishwasher.

Well, who dares wins I guess (at least I hope) I went with the hot sauce bottle after several washes and the vinegar trick listed above. Test on the back of my hand led to no heat so tomorrow will be the shave test. May God have mercy on my face.

The oil itself is very nice, the perfect thickness and it seems extremely slick. If the hot sauce gets me tomorrow, well I have more oil and the two plastic containers anyway.

Edit: I didn't want to put it through the dishwasher because I wanted to keep the label intact as much as possible.

There's an old wives tale about chili promoting hair growth & there are recipes for homemade hair tonics online that include cayenne for women trying to grow out their hair. Just FYI, in case you turn into the Wolfman around lunchtime tomorrow.

Tabasco sauce is one of my favorite bottles to use as the neck is very tapered and elegant looking and the pour hole is small. Any bottle will do however it's a matter of choice,I've have used (small)A1 sauce bottles, marinade bottles anthing that suits your fancy. I wash my bottles out with hot water and Dawn dish detergent and let air dry. I've never had any type of residual smell or burning feeling from any of the sauces, hot or otherwise.....:)

    I've decanted:
Aqua Velva Ice Blue and Sport,
    Mennen Skin Bracer,
    Pinaud Original and Special Reserve,
    Brut,
    Murry and Lanman Florida Water,
    Dollar store Old Spice,
    Masters BayRum,
    Pinaud Lilac Vegital
Also Corn Huskers Lotion for preshave and Nivea sensitive post shave balm, both in Amsterdam Pints one in Gin bottle the other in Vodka bottle because the caps are different.

Glass bottles I've used(all have at least slightly different shapes):
    Pomeian Olive Oil-4 oz
    A1 Steak Sauce-5 oz.
    Mint sauce bottle-5 fl.oz
    Franks Red Hot Sauce-5 fl.oz
    Cholula Hot Sauce-5 fl.oz
    Louisiana Hot Sauce-6 fl.oz
    Texas Pete Hot Sauce-6 oz
    W/D Hot Sauce-6 fl.oz
    Frenchs Worchester Sauce 10 oz

Also don't throw away the limiters in the As bottles some will fit the glass bottles...:)

I.M.O. all of the after shaves decanted to glass smell better than when they were in plastic of course YMMV.

Sometimes kitchen supply stores will sell individual glass bottles with secure closures that they sell for spice and herb containers.

Excellent shave today. I used the Axe face wash in the shower. It was not particularly cooling despite the "Chilled" appellation. I imagine it washed my face, which is what it was there for after all. I did not use conditioner on my beard as I planned on using the oil. The shave oil went on not feeling as slick as I was thinking it would. I left the oil on while preparing the brush and building a bowl lather. It was nicely lemon scented (and thankfully not Habanero feeling). I lathered over the oil and the lather was great. I shaved with a '57 Super Speed Flare with a Personna Lab blade (D3 or D4). My face was noticeably slicker feeling in the first and second pass. I believed that the oil was probably gone by the third pass. At the end of the shave, I had a perfectly smooth, soft face and certainly the equal, if not best, of any shave I have ever had. most importantly, I have been nicking myself on pretty much every shave I have had for the last three weeks. Today, no nicks, No weepers, no razor burn, no rough patches, just an excellent shave.

I highly recommend Sara's Shave Oil recipe for anyone who thinks they may want to try a pre-shave oil, even for many who do not think so. I know everything does not work for everyone, but this oil definitely works for me. Thanks Sara.
