I have a Colgate shave stick holder. It doesn't have a push-up bottom like modern plastic tubes. So were the older metal containers just for storage? Take the stick out, use it, let it dry, put it back?

Yup. There were some that the bottom was a holder I think. I have a Williams tin that I keep a homemade stick in.

So I bought one of the new plastic tubes. Do I thread the Arko onto the stem? Im obviously the least mechanical person on the site.

Exactly. (Just push it into the tube, with the "platform" all the way lowered) The stem will skewer the Arko.

I used an old deodorant container and filled it with Arko. It works great.

Then I got a dispenser and put a stick of Derby in it as you described.

i didnt find much difference between arko and derby.

i do like the soft consistency of the arko...my stubble picks up the soap quite easily.

some shave sticks like Lea are kind of hard soap so i dont feel that much soap gets scraped off on my face if i dont have much stubble.
