Hey guys, anyone purchased a shaving soap that comes in wooden bowl? Like this one below: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Crabtree-Ev...482?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a29fdb212 Have you finished the content and use it as a normal shaving bowl to build a lather? I was thinking of getting a wooden bowl to match my wooden shavette. I just couldn't find the right bowl I wanted for building lather. The one I posted in the link is ideal! I'm just not sure of its functionality as a shaving bowl.
Yes, it can function as a shaving bowl. The question is, will it function to your satisfaction? I ask that because I've seen some bowls folks use to whip up their lather, and while it works for them and they are happy with them, I can tell just by looking at the bowl it would not be something I personally would use. Why? It's my shave. I'll enjoy it my way.
The bowls that soaps are packaged in are really just for looks and storage, they do not work well to build lather in. Building your lather on top of the soap puck rather than just loading the brush and then lathering on your face or in a separate bowl will wear down your soap much faster than necessary. If you want to use a bowl then athering in a separate bowl is really the best way to go about it. There are some nice "decorative" wooden bowls at Target, World Market, and Pier 1. If you're looking for an actual lather bowl rather than a nice looking soap storage bowl, then I would check out some of those places.
Nah. I don't intend to use the bowl to lather while the soap puck is still inside. I wanted to get a empty bowl like that to use for lather. Because if it is good for lathering, I don't mind building a lather in a cup temporarily until the soap in the bowl is finished.
Ahh, well then it may meet your needs, but those bowls are fairly small. Using a larger bowl makes it easier to build lather. This one isn't quite as pretty, but is the same size and is also much less expensive: http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/ki...2972&sst=1e95dd49-09c1-ec89-bba4-00003e4cf1bd
If you want the decorative types like the ones you see housing soaps, then the link I provided is a good one, as are any of the bowls available at Connaught Shaving (Connaught Shaving is based out of the UK, but they have fast and cheap shipping and excellent prices for their products). http://www.connaughtshaving.com/woodenbowls.html This one I have found in a few stores, it's nice and wide, but a bit shallow: http://www.eliterestaurantequipment...l-8-wwb-8.html?SID=0u2g3st4vhu0c0506ds1jbs452 This one is a bit smaller, but also more expensive: http://www.opentip.com/Home-Kitchen...andcarved-Olive-Wood-Bowl-Inch-p-3806233.html To be honest, I usually just find wooden bowls at department stores or discount stores. They're all over the place and are usually pretty cheap. Target, Ross, Macy's, and World Market all have some good decorative wooden bowls.
I have the C&E wooden bowl,Kingsley and various vintage wooden bowls and I completely agree with Steve, in that like razors there is no "PERFECT" bowl, there is only the bowl(shape/material) you prefer.... That said I.M.O. the C&E bowl shape(rounded bottom) fit my hand better than the Kingsley(flat bottom). I find the sides on both a little too low....After spending so much money and trying many bowls (wooden, ceramic, marble & steel) I woundup choosing the first lather bowl I ever used, the green VDH ceramic bowl. For me it's the right size, right price and is easy to make my lather in... One more F.Y.I. I spent "ALOT" on wooden bowls for soap storage(mostly Kingsley)..If you want inexpensive, durable, sealable, see-thru, easy to mark/lable, locally available, stackable containers that will hold two normal pucks of soap and don't look that bad, Think "Ziploc" small food containers....
I just purchased this soap and bowl. I would say its a little small to work a lather comfortably. I only use it to load the soap on to my silvertip. It does look nice to have, I keep it with a stand. If you want a wooden bowl, I'd suggest to go to a kitchen store, Sur La Table, for example. I saw tons of good looking wooden bowls there that were bigger and would work well. Good luck, old sport.
I bought my first soap in a wooden bowl (D.R. Harris), with the intention of using the soap and then possibly using the bowl for lathering after the soap was gone. I felt - once I received it - that it was too small, but then saw that other soaps had "refills" of their soaps and saw a lot of different wooden bowls that I thought were neat and the prices weren't too bad I like to shave in the shower, and the thought of dropping a ceramic bowl scared me so I went all wood. I now have a different wood bowl for all of my favorite soaps. Cella comes in a plastic bowl, so I just kept that one. DR Harris lavender, Marlborough and Arlington - Tabac and MWF are in these. I put little plastic feet on the bottoms to keep them from sitting in water and so the shelf in my shower will dry. The only thing you have to remember is that some bowls are curved at the bottom, so some soaps (MWF) wont fit because of the curvature of the bowl. I plan on keeping the same soap in the same bowls so I marked on the bottom of the bowl, what soap I will refill into what bowl when I m out.
I've got two soaps that I bought in wooden bowls: GFT rose soap, and TOBS sandalwood. I'm sure that I would lather in either of them just fine, but I think that most any plain bowl would work as well or better. That being said, I've never actually tried it.
i like the wooden bowls since they look nice but its not a necessity. that plisson bowl is super cool looking but i;m not spending a hundred bux for it. http://www.fendrihan.com/jorisplisson-shaving-soap-thuja-wood-bowl-p-1101.html
Best bowls I've found for shaving so far, all were bought from...Goodwill! Seriously, they have all kinds of bowls - wood, ceramic, stone, metal, bakelite, natural and synthetics galore; get this - for very little money!! If you want a wood bowl, but don't know if you'll like/too expensive/can't wait to be done with the product that's in it or if it's just to match your razor, check out the Goodwill or Salvage Army, I can almost guarantee that you'll find something you'll like.
My daily lather bowl is just a small ceramic bowl from walmart that I got for like $2. It looks good and works just fine.
I used to think the wooden bowls were cool, but I've changed my mnd. Every wooden bowl I've seen has been filled almost to the top with soap and there is little room to build a lather while loading one's brush. I overflows.l I much prefer a ceramic cup (such as an Old Spice from years ago). It gives more room to work the brush. Also I'm leary of microwaving soap in a wooden bowl. Wooden bowls look good, but that's about all I can say that is positive.
That C& E Sandalwood is one of my all-time favorites... it takes so little to work up a good lather that the wooden bowl works fine IMO
Actually, both. Mostly safety though. I really don't feel comfortable with glass or ceramic soap bowls while in the shower. I don't trust myself with soapy hands and before I have my coffee! But that's just me. And I think they look cool.
