Shea Moisture Three Butters Utility Soap I found this at Target Friday night, and decided I had to test this out. I haven't heard of this soap on the forum, and yes I know how bad their shaving cream is reported to be (I haven't tried it). First thing I noticed was the scent. My nose says Sandalwood, Cedarwood, and maybe Frankincense. The box says "Essential Oil Blend". Whatever it is, it's very woodsy, and what most folks would call masculine smelling. I approve! Next thing to inspect was "shower" part of this bar's description. As a bath soap it is pretty decent, based solely on this first use, and the lather was promising looking for the next task at hand; the shave. It left my skin feeling clean, but not dry, and the fragrance is ever so slightly noticeable on my skin (if you're close enough. arm-to-nose close.) Again, I approve! As for the shave, the lather was stable and cushioning. I'm a shaving cream kinda gal, so the slickness wasn't quite to my standards, but the shave was comfortable and irritation-free. As a shaving soap, I approve! I didn't try the soap as a shampoo bar yet, but will when I have time to re-wash my hair if necessary. I have long hair and haven't had good experiences with shampoo bars in the past. I'll continue using this soap, and will update this thread with my further experiences and thoughts. I'd recommend trying it. Hopefully your local Target carries it. If not, it is available at Amazon.
I've had a bar of this for about 3 months and I only used it twice. I do love the cent and the properties. However, once I learned how to use a brush with cream properly, that was the end of that bar. I'm glad that you've given it a review and I'll pull it out of the cabinet and give it another go. Can I use my badger brush with this bar ? Thanks again for reminding me of it ! Peace
Oops, forgot to mention the brush I used. I used my De Vergulde Hand boar brush this time. I'll try it with a badger next.
Just wondering - why do you think you wouldn't be able to use your badger brush? There is no such thing as a "soap" brush, or a "cream" brush, or a "bowl lathering" brush, or a "face lathering" brush, only "personal preference" brushes. Use the brush you have, use the brush you like - soap, cream, face or bowl - it doesn't matter, they all work. You just gotta learn how to use the tools ya got.
True, but if Steve likes it, then I'm positive I won't. It's not about the scent so much as messing with Steve!
Holy crap, Bill still posts here! And, the Cockeysville, MD Target doesn't have any of this cedarwood/mess with Steve scented utility soap .
Yup, you said it correctly. I tried with my brush yesterday, and the only thing that I didn't like was that I didn't get a great lather. Maybe my technic with the bar in the mug isn't up to par yet. The last time I used it I did a hand lather. Peace
Loading the brush, straight off the bar. Little baby lather in its embryonic stage, aww its cute Prepubescent lather entering maturity, Its still pretty useless at this point to be honest. At this point I find it to be moderately acceptable, but still pretty weak and thin. I attribute this to my noob lathering skills. So my work around for this, thinking back to my shower last night.... Just wet my hair and rub the bar on it working the lather with a DirtDiver hair "brush" and my fingers. Squeeze some out of my head and hand apply to face and ahhhh. There it is. Thick, creamy fluff like it came out of a can of goop, only way better for the skin and much slicker. Sorry you have to see my ugly mug But as you can see, it ended up lathering quite well. It shaved great, nice and slick and soft. Well cushioned against the blade and actually the first one that I didnt bleed AT ALL. Even the alum block didnt sting. Well played Shea Moisture, well played. As always, YMMV. Disclaimer: I still prefer AoS sandalwood, but as a multipurpose travel soap/shampoo/shave cream, this will stay in the den for me Well, there you go. Hope I didnt bore you guys too much. I'm out!
I use two other Shea Moisture products (facial scrub and A/S balm) and really like them. I was hesitant to try the soap. Maybe one day soon I'll pick one up and see how it does for me.
I use this bar soap in the shower everyday and I love how it leaves my skin. I have not tried it for shaving, but now maybe I will!
I've since used the soap for showering (I have used gels for the last 10 yrs!). I love this soap, though I'm not sure I would use it for shaving.
Agree here 100%. Its my everyday shower soap. I picked up about a dozen bars from the local CVS@ closeout for about $2 a bar—which is less than 1/2 the normal price.
Really? The lather I get from using it as a shampoo bar and a body bar is quite shaving soap like. It lathers better for me than any other locally available commercial shaving soap. In fact, I generally don't like shave soap because it takes too much work to lather it, but this is easy (I'd guess due to using it as shampoo and body soap before lathering for a shave every shower. Kinda like soaking/putting a little water on other shave soap pucks before lathering. ) Oh, just to add; Shea Moisture does make other soaps, and all their product names are ridiculously long. So, if someone bought one of their other soaps, it might not be suitable for shaving.
You mean, such as the "SheaMoisture African Black Soap Purification Masque with Tea Tree Oil & Willow Bark Extract" or the "SheaMoisture Coconut and Hibiscus Dead Sea Salt Nourishing Soak with Gluten-Free Vitamin E"?
It gives me a "different" lather than the Black soap, which is not a bad thing. It just seemed thinner to me. I guess the only way I'll know is if I try it on my next shave. Maybe I'll be surprised, which would be great since this has been my shower soap for the past few months. I do find it more moisturizing than most of the shower gels I've used in the last decade or so.
