I look forward to receiving this one in the mail. The ebay seller didn't have much to say about it other than the obvious descriptors, "Vintage straight razor; 'Silver Steel Warranted' on tang with an anchor and letter V, 3/4 wide." I'm not sure if the blade a near wedge (probable). Overall, it looks to be in pretty decent shape; estimate it to be in the 1850-1880 range of manufacture. 'Anchor' stamp can mean Birmingham as silver steel source of manufacture. I'll know more once I see it all up close & in person. It should clean and polish up nicely!
I hope its an easy clean up. I anticipate the pivot pin is probably a bit wobbly and the pin hole oversized, but the scales appear to be intact. The blade itself looks to be in better shape than some of my more recent Sheffield oldies. THEY cleaned up rather nicely, such as this W&B wedge (below). Hopefully this one will be as agreeable.
yes indeed—the scales are one of the main reasons I opted to acquire. A nice old sheffield wedge is pretty darned nice, too, of course, but the scales add some character… Steve, I can use all the honing practice I can get! I anticipate a challenge lies in store if it is indeed a wedge…..
Your streak continues... You certainly did a nice job with the example you showed. Let's see some pictures once you get them in!
I've a mountain of restore work ahead of me (30+ razors)....Good thing the office is closed next week. I may be able to try & make a dent in that mountain.
