I've noticed that the scent of my shaving soap, currently the sweetness of Blades Grim's Smolder, lingers on my face "underneath" my aftershave splash, Captain's Choice Lime.

Does this mean that shaving soaps/creams should be paired with the aftershave? Pairing doesn't necessarily meant using the same brand and scent, but pairing the scents that go well together, like pairing wine with your meal. If this is the case, I may go unscented on everything except the aftershave.

It depends how long the scents linger, I think. Also, a lot of scents do go together or at least don't conlict with one another. For the most part, as long as your cream/soap isn't really strong smelling you're okay.

I really do not think that they should be paired together. I do think that if you were going to pair something together it should be the Aftershave and the Aftershave Balm scent. :shaver

    I don't worry about it.
    My shampoo has one scent
My shower soap has a different scent
My PSO has a different scent
My shave soap has a different scent
My aftershave has a different scent
My cologne has a different scent
My pit stick has s different scent

I can't afford to match it all.
Besides, when I come down from getting ready for work, my wife tells me I smell good. And she's the only one who matters!

    Please, DudeScent,

Don't make it more complicated than it is.
I doubt that my nose is as sensitive as it should be to pair different odours.

I find that my aftershave overpowers anything else, perhaps because it is the last thing I slap on my face. And it has soon faded away.

But! If you do decide to try and marry them all up to compliment everything (from pits to shampoo to AS to SC/SS) please let us know :)

I am interested but will probably never shell out the dollhairs to mate everything up.

    dudescent,
I don't try to 'marry them all up'. I don't use pre or after shave creams just shaving creams and soaps and aftershave,
But let someone make a regulation prohibiting mixing the way I wish I will do it because I am ornery and love breaking unreasonable rules.
If I am told I can't mix ketchup or worcestershire sauce or brown gravy with my shaving cream, I would be obliged to do just that.

I once mixed shaving cream with Proraso Pre/After cream to see what would happen. It was not good but was interesting.
I also attempted mixin Neutrogena shave cream with four other shaving creams/soaps. Nothing good came of this.
I frequently mix R.P.Roberts Shaving Cream which is scentless with a drop or two of Aqua Velva Musk. It gives me exactly what I want.

Whether the experiments pass or fail it is fun to try and I might come up with my perfect product. A shaving cream that requires no blade.

Now. Off to my secret underground laboratory.

Hee hee hee hee. Igor, fetch my cape.

I used to worry about pairing scents or purchasing matching scent products. But, I have walked away from that line of thinking. The scent the does hang around from the shaving soap and after shave does not last very long and if it does hang around it is only a skin scent that someone else would have to be very close to your face to pick up. It all comes down to " It is YOUR shave, enjoy it YOUR way".

Only worry about trying to match the aftershave with the balm. Usually end up using a non scent balm.

Thanks for voting and for the replies. It looks like people don't pair their soaps with aftershave. This makes complete sense as the scents are so temporary. I must say that the Blades Grim "Smolder" soap lasted several hours after my shave and I asked this question to see if it was something that happened with a lot of other soaps - I'm less than 2 months into wet shaving.

It's amazing how my acquisition disorder now puts so much importance on the fragrance, whereby before the smell was either ok or not, now there's a question of which fragrance I like will turn into a full product purchase after the sample is used.

I bought TSD Ice Subzero soap and milk. I'll use the milk with other soaps. I've never thought about it.

Thanks for that one Kevin! :happy108:

Personally I'm not much of a scent guy so I don't really seek out products that are meant to have a strong or lingering scent, but I have found that the Mitchell's and more recently the Cella tend to rinse off without leaving any scent behind, or at least not enough for my nose to detect.

My standard AS splash is DIY mix of witch-hazel and alcohol without any scent added, though recently I've been working my way through a batch infused with a couple of cedar sprigs. It's a very mild effect but I do notice the cedar a bit when I first splash it on, but then I don't think it lingers for long.
