Hey folks, I've seen some pictures of people using an altoids tin with foam cut out to fit razors and love the idea. My only issue is that some of my razors may not fit. Either the handle is too long or they're a TTO and too thick for the tin. I want something that is basically crush proof but still small enough to travel with and not take up half the bag. What do you use for your razors, particularly TTO and/or long handle to travel?? I'm looking for DIY solutions since most of my razors are not factory cased. Thanks in advance! And remember, ics:
Look for gift card tins. I have some from sears and lowes that look like they would work if you cut the foam so the razor is at a slight angle in the tin.
The biggest problem I've found with tins is they're not deep enough. For a Fat Boy or Slim you need at least 1 1/4" to accommodate the 1" thick head plus foam to protraction. I have yet to find anything deep like that...
Are you burning to use a tin? I bet you could get creative with PVC pipe and some of that round pipe insulation foam! Shoot! If you don't like the pipe foam, I've got a crazy vision of filling a mold with that expanding spray foam and carving the result to fit your razor (plus a nice felt or velour covering, of course!). It slides right into the PVC and then you put caps on either end. Do you see the light?... The band!
Joelio; @maltedmilk does what I do for exactly the reason you are having problems. Most tins of that sort will not take a slim or a fat boy, which is what I use a lot. The tins from older razors usually are too short to hold the slim's handle. Tins from altoids and such are too thin, Glass cases work well, I ended up using PVC. The problem is that it is big. The minimum sized PVC you can use is 2" if you are using a slim or a fat boy. Here is a picture showing a fat boy inside a 2" pvc and a "typical" razor case with a slim.
The only reason I was thinking metal vs plastic was to give a vintagey feel to it. I'll end up doing plastic if I can't find anything else that works. I found this " Pre de Provence 250g Soap Metal Travel Box" but I can't find dimensions anywhere. At $10, I don't want to buy it if it's too small....
I found something that is perfect! It's a tin I found from an etsy shop. It's 3.5"x5" and about 2" thick. I cut some foam to make an insert to fit 2 razors, and will make more so I can take different combinations of razors. This first one is for my 37c and my MR8/Cadet combo. I'm still going to put some black cloth over the top of it to give it a more finished look and then figure out some form of latch/strap to hold it closed (so I don't have to use the ghetto rubber bands) but this is gonna be great!
I use case logic soft cases because I need padding to prevent scratches and dings. I really don't need crush protection that a hard case would provide. The padded soft case also pads the other objects inside my shave kit.
