So @mikewood had mentioned about remembering people getting dressed up to go to the movies, and in the class I just finished we were talking about similar things, and this one guy said his kids didn't know what dial tone was. So on my long drive back home (stopping for the day), I started thinking about the things I remember that aren't around, or around as prevalent. I'm only 35, so I'm sure some of you older gents will have even better ones, but for me... - Landlines. - Having to get up to change the channel - Rabbit ears for the TV, and standing on the chair to try and find that perfect position, and if you let go it would get fuzzy but if you held on the picture would stay clear. - VCRs with corded remotes. - Taping TV shows/movies with the VCR, and sometimes hitting pause to try and not get the commercials, but hoping to be quick enough on the play to resume recording. - Time & Temp. The number you'd call to learn what it was. Still active, but don't know who uses it. - Looking up people in the white pages. - Pay Phones. - East Germany - VHS. I own three VHS copies of Star Wars, all different. - 3.5" "Floppy" Disks and 5.25" Floppy disks. - Rotary Phones - Saturday morning cartoons - Dial up internet I'm there are others that will come up. What do you remember?
Film cameras. Professionals still use them, but I haven't used a film camera since the early 2000s I think. Real barbershops are just about a thing of the past, too.
Woman and girls wearing head coverings in church Driving without seat belts on...legally People smoking in movie theaters, doctors offices, on airplanes and in restaurants Eating out at a fast-food restaurant maybe one a month...as a treat Gas station attendants who checked under the hood, air in tires, wipers and filled the tank while you sat comfortably in your car.
That's a good one, I had thought about it but forgot to include it. I don't even know if you can buy film outside of a camera store or like a CVS/Walgreens. And that reminded me of.. Cassette tapes. My first one was a MC Hammer tape. I also remember trying to record songs with them off the radio, but either you'd miss the first couple seconds or having the annoying DJ talking over it.
Cars without seat belts (from the factory) Studded snow tires Vent windows (cars) Party line (telephone) Hand pump for water in a rural farmhouse kitchen Zippo lighters (actually I remember the "click" of a Zippo lighter) Large decorative ash trays Siren atop the fire station to summon firefighters Telegrams Curb feelers Milk box on the front stoop Ice cream trucks with real ice cream Local train service
Another good one. I remember the Phone Booth movie with Colin Farrell. And with that comes payphones. I remember trying to call home from Six Flags from one (still in the same area code) but it was a long distance call and I didn't have enough quarters. Prepaid phone cards too.
Family car trips without entertainment systems and without seat belts or carseats. boom boxes The original Walkman The "way back" in a station wagon with rear facing pop up bench seat daily family dinner time (and mom cooking it) One TV in the house (and only 8 stations, I think) Home computers with a WHOPPING 64k of memory. Handwriting paper (the kind with the dashed center line) Handwriting examplars over the (green) blackboard in school
I remember my first USB thumb drive, 256MB and that was one of the biggest at the time. Was expensive too. I think I also had a 512 MB external hard drive.
I can remember putting a 20MB hard drive in my first PC. Going down this track, let's not forget Zip and Jazz drives.
recording music onto cassette tapes from my old led zeppelin and stones records. pumping the gas pedal to engage the choke when starting my truck or pulling out the choke cable. telling the people on the party line that i need the phone ice cream...it isn t real anymore? 2 packs of cigs for$1.89 lee denim jackets box of beer for 12 bucks adjustable bic lighters things i don t miss; orange shag carpet 80s hair dos brown cars
