Soap - Most bang for your buck

Discussion in 'Shave Soaps' started by Phillip'sHeadw/aFlattop, Jun 9, 2011.

  1. Looking for a decent soap, fairly inexpensive yet not cheap, suggestions. Hear alot about proraso. Looking for something not so menthol. Alil more woodsy, not too masculine.

TSD? I'll let you know how it is when I get mine but you cant beat the price. If it's as good as I've read it'll be hard to beat....and your supporting this forum!

TSD soaps. Don't know about the creams, but even if they're half as good as the soaps, you'll be getting a super fantastic cream.

I wouldn't call it woodsy, but Arko shave stick definitely provides the most bang for your buck. It is easy to whip into a nice slick creamy lather. If you don't like using a stick, it is also pliable and can be easily smushed into a mug.

:sihns011 Yup, what Dale said. I wanted somehting good, and low cost to keep at my parents and in-laws homes (remote shave dens). Arko was it. It's in my main shave den as well.

I'll second the Arko shave stick as the best bargain among soaps. The only issue is it has a significant citronella note (woods, citronella, and cinnamon are what I get) which many don't care for. The performance is among the best soaps and a stick can be found for about $2.

TSD soaps are also excellent and well priced. A little more than Arko, but with many great scent options. I've only tried bamboo and teak for woodsy scents and it was just OK. You could go with a general favorite like TSD signature, bourbon vanilla, or lime. Or, you might get a few woodsy suggestions if you ask.

If you want plain, good, cheap and long lasting shave soap look no further than a palmolive shave stick (or 2) mashed into a mug.
I have palmolive and erasmic soaps mixed together and though I think I prefer the erasmic, the palmolive wears down at a slower rate.
The downside is that it will take a little longer for it to lather up.

IMHO Mitchell's Wool Fat offers the biggest bang for the Buck.

Does TSD make a shave stick ? I looked around a little bit and didn't see one.

Though I have been using shave creams and my fingers to smear the cream on my face, then face lathering.
Is the TSD cream, creamy enough to be able to do that ?

I really like the Irisch Moos stick (though I milled it into a bowl) and L'Occitane Cade (a pine scent but not overbearing). Both can be had for under 20 bucks.

Here's what I've tried from TSD and believe to be "woodsy"

Cedarwood - perhaps my favorite TSD scent
    Lemon & Cedarwood
    English Fern
    Blue Juniper

:sihns011 Get the refill puck for 13.00$ and using it every day will last you at least 6 months minimum. It's the best lathering product I've tried. The TSD soaps are delicious as well, also I just ordered Queen Charlotte soap, now that they make tallow pucks, so I'll see how that stuff is. It costs $13.00 as well.

TSD doesnt make a stick but you can always melt and pour soap or mill and press into a stick form.

    This.

Not at all the scent you described, but ARKO is pretty indisputably the best "Bang for Buck" shaving soap out there.

Well, everyone's mentioning Arko, and it's certainly the lowest cost per ounce of anything I know. Lathers great, too. The smell is a take it or leave it thing. I think it's pleasant enough, but it's strong, at least until it's had a chance to air out for a while. I'm not entirely sure what "woodsy" is, but Arko isn't it.

Maybe the smell of Speick shave stick would fit that category. Costs more than Arko, but still not really expensive on a per-shave basis.

AH! I just ordered the sandalwood. I was torn between the two and this may make me regret me decision. Oh well, just have to get Cedarwood too!

I think Arko's a great soap. But when it's fresh out of the pack before it airs out. It reminds me of a Urinal Cake in a dirty gas station restroom. :D Wilkinson Sword Blue reminds me of a Urinal puck in a Clean upscale public restroom.:o Do they use Citronella in urinal pucks?
