Just what the title says: Stahly Live Blade razor.... Thoughts? If you have one, or have used one in the past, what do you think??
The motorized mechanism is a total gimmick ... however ... the head when removed from the wind up gizmo of a handle, becomes an extremely effective and efficient razor when mounted to a standard three piece DE handle. The head alone is very valuable in good shape.
My thoughts exactly. I have one that operates perfectly, but like Gary said, put the head on, say, a Fat Handle Tech handle, and you're in for one fantastic shave! I find the Stahly handle too heavy and bulky for me, even without winding it up.
I've been looking for a Stahly on ebay for a while. While they are actually not that hard to find, I also only want the head to try on my other 3 piece handles, as I've also heard the shave head is actually quite good and so I want it for "VERY" cheap . Luckily my Weber DLC shaves fine so I can be patient.
YOWZA! This thing has always looked like a gimmick to me, but it seems to have been marketed to the high end! According to http://www.dollartimes.com/calculators/inflation.htm, $19.95 in 1947 had the same buying power as $216.25 in 2014.
…or about 1/2 the price of one of these: BornSharp A similar concept of a shaving 'gimmick' that comes at a very high price, which impedes the potential success or widespread use by the general shaving community.
I've seen a couple of these before and passed them over because of the price. I didn't really understand what it was at the time but they did strike me as gimmicky and remember the handle was way too bulky for my liking. Let us know how you like it.
I picked one up this weekend at an antique shop for $40. It's in awesome shape, and had the original leather case. I have no intention of using it; it will be a display piece. However, I may have to try the head on another handle, as per some of the above suggestions.
