Just read an artical on Fox.com about the new Presidents Stimulus package. can someone tell me how this stuff helps the Economy?

"Among the funding measures included in the proposal are $25 million for new ATV trails; $400 million for the National Endowment for the Arts; $400 million for global warming research; $335 million for the Centers for Disease Control to combat sexually-transmitted diseases; and $650 million coupons to subsidize TV viewers for digital television conversion."

    Well, you know..........change.

I'd love to know a "real" answer to your question myself, though.

And as already stated let's keep it civil, folks.

Queen if It goes sideways I will delete the question. I am really wanting to see if anyone can tell me about this.

An exercise in futility to look for logic in any (U.S.) Government decision.

I see two items with *some* merit:
-$335 million for the Centers for Disease Control to combat sexually-transmitted diseases
STD's drain money from areas of our economy that actually improve peoples lives. This fits with "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".
-$650 million coupons to subsidize TV viewers for digital television conversion.
This conversion is designed to free up broadcasting bandwith, allowing for additional technology development. Any successful new technology will improve the economy.

I'm not claiming those are highly effective stimulus items, but they at least make a little sense. The remaining items don't make sense to me at all.

Really how hard is this to combat.. Trojan has been in business forever. You can get free ones at a lot of places.

On the second.. How does that help the economy now?

25 million dollars for ATV trails is a little ridiculous, but 400 million dollars for global warming research is a lot ridiculous.

I'm glad to see the money for ATV trails, like snowmobiling a lot can be generated to the smaller towns by attracting riders.

ATV sales go up, local businesses see more sales, etc, etc, etc...

As far as global warming, bring that stuff on!

Amen. I wonder where the ATV trails are. And really how many jobs can that create? How does it stimulate the economy?

People are going to buy ATVs, when they are getting laid off and can't even put food on the table?

Not gonna get sucked into an ideological debate over any of this so I won't respond w/ anything specific. However in a broader sense I think the new administration is doing whatever it can to get things going Fuzzy. Some may seem ridiculous and others bizarre but perhaps there is a method to the madness. I think there's a sense that desperate times call for desperate measures. There's no denying Obama inherited a mess and is charged w/ cleaning it up.

I'd still rather live here than most places, with no derogatory intent towards our foreign brothers.

True. But what do these measures have to do with getting the economy back on track? Just looking for an explanation.

Doesn't mean we shouldn't question the government's actions.

Stimulating the entertainment aspect of Americans lives at this time isn't gonna create jobs, IMO.

I work in Pharma industry and I've worked in the health sector in the past. I can think of alot of good smart dedicated people who are going to be able to make a living helping to limit the effects that STD's have on our population.

Entertainment industry has taken a hammering, as has consumer electronics. I see the change over to digital as a utilities infrastructure project. Telecomunications business is big business for the US and we stand alot to gain by changeing, but the change threatens to cut into Entertainment's advert income if people cannot watch.

I personally beleive that the nation who first cracks real implementable solutions for global warming will reap a bonanza of profits. In the meantime, this money fuels our fundamental sciences sector and the sciences and the inovations that develop from them are a real source of US economic and military power. The same nanotec carbon tubes we create for filtration systems for factories could also be the basis of tomorrows tactical armour. Science makes us great, and yes there are a large amount of good paying jobs from the researchers to the chemical compaines who generate and ship raw materials.

Well I'm no economist, but I believe the idea behind pumping money into these and other areas is to create jobs and stimulate spending. I'm sure the stimulus package includes other areas besides these four mentioned as well. Putting a pay check in peoples pockets gets them paying taxes, buying food for the table, going to the casino and buying shave products. Just so's I don't come off snarky I'll include myself too; it gets people traveling international. Everyone of us depends on others working to keep ourselves in business. That's the idea behind any stimulus package. As I see it anyhow.

A very small group of people that are probably already employed and making good money. I would think, Oh and how hard is it to limit the effect of something that is almost completely controllable through smart thinking. What their dad did not teach them about things.
