Sure, northern California doesn't get that hot in the summer time - unless you head over to the east bay - but sometimes it does hit the 80-90 mark. I'm pretty sure hard soaps are ok but I do kind of worry a bit about croaps and creams if the hot weather can break them down/make them go bad. I've heard people putting their Cella 1kg blocks in dark, cold areas as otherwise the soap develops a yellow tone and people claim it performs differently (yes, I'm repeating internet rumours - but it seems to be a common one). For those of you that live in warmer areas do you take any steps to store your soap collection safely - especially during the summer?
There's no need to do that unless you have extreme 100+ heat, and even then, there's probably no need for it. I've read a lot of silly things, people putting their creams in the fridge to 'save them' from the heat. I think there's a couple types of TOBS (avocado is one I've read) that thin out in the heat. Shaving products aren't made out of mayonnaise. They aren't going to spoil in the heat. Some formulas may thin out a little but will come right back to normal when cooled down. As for soaps and croaps -- if it's hot enough to effect them, you likely won't be alive to worry about it. I don't have AC, in our 98 degree weather my bathroom ranges from 85 at night to 105 during the day, and I have never seen a problem.
I live in a PUD aka Planned Urban Development , aka Condo HOA or HOA Gestapo. (Glorified Apartment?)What's Air Conditioning? It's illegal to have an Air conditioner here
Sorry @PatrickA51 for your misfortune. With my programmable thermostat the temp is 81°until an hour before I get home when it drops to 78°. My soaps and creams are safe from South Florida summers.
Cella can and does get rancid. It's a combination of no preservatives and tallow. All tallow based Italian soft soaps should be stored in a cool dark place if they are not in the regular rotation. Especially those huge 1 kg. blocks of shave soap.
I favor cool, dark places for storage, especially for products that have no preservatives. If it causes you any worry, go ahead and put them in the fridge. This is a hobby and is supposed to be fun and cause no worries, right? How much room will it take up in the fridge...well, for most of us. Plus, it'll stir up @Mr. Shaverman, and I like that.
Good idea! Target and Walmart sell those little fridges that look like old timey Coke machines and only hold a 6 pack. I'm sure most people would be able to fit it on their counter top right between the hot lather machine and the towel heater.
You know someone has both the lather and towel warmers on their counter. I swear over at B&B there's a few guys that are recreating a 1940's barber shop in their bathroom.
I would recommend keeping the soaps in a cool dry place as mentioned. out of direct sunlight and with a lid on it if that's what you prefer. if it does melt it should return to normal consistency once it cools down.
Just make sure there clearly labeled. Or else someone may confuse them for containers of specialty hummus or dips. It may sound silly but if it has a picture of an avocado and it's in a plastic tub in the fridge. Mmmm guacamole, fruit dip, hummus. Yummy.
Yep, I am working on redoing on of my spare bathrooms as well. Hot towel warmer and all. My wife keeps saying "what's next? Replace the toilet with a barbers chair ?" I reply jokingly " if I could figure out how to make it flush."
