I keep an eye on Krumholtz's auctions on eBay (yes, *that* Krumholtz). He often has interesting shaving items for sale. Today I won a blank Fingers blade. A blank straight razor blade is a blade that has been forged, but not yet ground. As an Oregonian, the thing that caught my eye was that it was made in Portland, OR. Do you guys think Portland Razor Co. Would be interested in grinding this old razor? Or do you think I should leave it as is?
I don't know what you paid for the blade, but grinding is an art, a chore, and possibly expensive, if you have another do this for you. I hope you have some good friends inside Portland Razor Co. It might be cheaper to just buy a NOS razor.
I've met them. Wouldn't say I'm friends, but they are only about a 20 minute drive away. Including shipping, I paid $5.29. I just thought it would be neat to have a 100 year old blade manufactured in Portland Oregon, be ground and finished by the only current straight razor manufacturer in Portland Oregon.
Well, it never hurts to ask. It would be cool if they were able to do this for you. Personally, I would like to see it work out.
I agree with this idea. Not using the tool for its intended purpose is a waste, like buying a Corvette and only driving it a handful of miles a year. Grind that blank and shave with it every day!
I agree with the camp of grinding that baby! I would think PRC would finish it for you. Those guys seem to be in the biz for the love of razors.
It would be fun to have it finished and I would probably go that route. On the other hand, by leaving it as is gives you a great conversation piece.
I am pretty sure you are going to need Final Grind AND a Temper Cycle I know the old Herder blanks were Heat Treated with a rough grind then they needed a Final Finish Grind and a Tempering You might want to post about this over at WSW http://wetshaversworkshop.com Imagine a forum with most all of the Restore guys and the Custom makers all in one place
