Are there any alternatives to the traditional leather strop? I am looking to get a strop, however, until that day comes... is there something else that would accomplish the same thing?

some use old newspaper, I used a belt for half a week till I got a real strop. seemed to work ok, but you have to do a pretty severe x pattern stroke to strop the whole blade.
I know a guy who bought a slightly ripped small size leather jacket for 2 bucks at a second hand store, cut off a sleeve, stuffed a 2x4 board in it and voila! A fab bench strop. He is still using it after about a year and says he still has a spare!
