So I have been on a mission for the last couple of weeks trying to get the last of my Stones/Hones mounted onto Stands/Dai

Almost done, but I thought you might like this one

Here is an oddball, you don’t see them often, especially in one piece !!

    Franz Swaty
    Marburg, Austria
    8” x 2”
    Barber’s Bench Hone

Is that the back end to the Swaty Barbers Hone?

They are simply a larger version of the Barber hone 8x2 rather than 5x2

They are not dual sided, same surface front or back

Mostly you find them broken, there were listed as "For Barber Use" For Professional Use" or "Barber's Bench Hone"

Like everything else some think they are better some think they are worse, I found it easy to use, but I do think it is a bit slower / finer than most BH's

What are the advantages of mounting the stone like this?

It gives you a stable platform, and with thinner stones especially, it gives you more knuckle clearance, for instance, when sharpening straight razors. It also adds a protective backing to the stone, which is important for some of the more fragile synthetic and Japanese stones.

I prefer the English style 'box' myself, as it protects the stone a bit more and keeps dust off it, and has the advantage of letting a person use both sides of the stone, an important factor if one side is flat and the other convex. The Japanese Dai has the advantage of simplicity and ease of manufacture. It is no more or less than it needs to be, and allows one to flatten the stone easily, and clean up after easily as well.
