This soap is awesome. Price: 9/10. I got this for $20 shipped off of Bullgooseshaving. That price will get you a giant puck of soap with a container. More to follow on that later. Quality: 10/10. This stuff is very good. There is just no more to say about that. Try it out if you don't believe me. Scent: 10/10. This stuff is indescribable. It's either something you love or hate. I love it just to put that out there. Lather: 10/10. It lathers up so easily, it almost feels too easy. It requires a lot of water. More than usual. Efficacy: 9/10. It's very slick. A little bit goes a long way and the puck will last forever. Moisturizing: 9/10. It doesn't seem too bad in that department. My face feels pretty good so far. Packaging: 10/10. It comes in a pretty sturdy box, the jar is also very nice. It's porcelain with a bakelite lid. The puck is also very secure inside the jar. Would I buy this again? Yes! I will never be without this product. This is easily a Top 3 soap for me. It's quickly becoming a favorite of mine.
Nice write up. Though polarizing, the scent of Tabac is one that seems to grow on shavers who come back to it over time. The milk glass container seems quite nice too.
Nice review of a great soap. If I may say, though, that the amount of water used will depend on the individual's brush size and type, and also the water hardness in their area. Right now I'm in Maine with my folks. They have softer water than I have at home. I've been using Tabac while I've been up here and I've found I can use less water and still get mounds of lather. That being said, it is a soap that I find will lather up a little easier than others.
I agree totally with this review. Tabac to me is the gold standard in soaps, the basis I compare all others to. Many approach it, but few surpass it at any price.
I want to try this, and Spieck. I'm trying to keep my acquisitions to a minimum at the moment, but when I finish one of the products I'm currently using it'll be a contender.
I agree completely, Tabac is an awesome soap and one of the very best available. Great review, Ryan! Based on my own experience, your ratings are dead on the money.
Tabac and Sir Irisch Moos (same soap base) are fantastic. If you load you brush like you normally do it may be enough for 5-6 passes. I have never run out after 3 passes without a ton of lather being squeezed out of my brush when finished!!!!
Well, I used to do it... My first attempts with soaps (Arko) were not very convincing, because I was too stingy when loading, as it appeared after some researching. So I used more product, and it would work better. So later on, once I had bought the legend Tabac is, I used the same technique and got sub par results with it ; especially, I did not get the mounds of lather often reported, nor would the consistence thereof be thick at all. Last week, I finally got good lathering results with the Monsavon, using the MWF-technique = very damp brush + softly loading until an embryo of lather is recognizable within the brush. So I decided to try that technique with Tabac and yesterday I did a practice lather using cold water. After some 20 seconds, the brush seemed to be loaded enough, yet with no bubbles appearing at this stage. I lathering in my bowl with 3 teaspoons ot water. A few swirls and bang ! an explosion of shiny, luxurious, thick and extra-lubricating lather ! Long story short : a shorter loading time (ca. 15 seconds, depending also on the wetness and temperature of the brush) than with other soaps is indicated for this one. And the lesson is : what works for one soap, does not necessarily work the same way with an other one !
Here are two lessons I've learned so far, soap is harder, and that's why most newbies prefer creams, and bowl lathering is harder, again why most newbies prefer face lathering. btw, you can get it for 17bucks from Connaught, 23 with shipping across the pond.
