Hello. I've noticed on youtube shaving videos that many guys use Thayers before the aftershave. Can I apply an alum block, rinse the alum block and then Thayers and then aftershave? Or would it be to irritating for the skin? There is also Thayers toners and Thayers astringents. What is the difference?
My post shave is a cold water rinse, then alum, dry my face, splash Thayer's toner, wait a minute or so, dry my face, splash on aftershave. Been doing that for a couple of years with no issues. Note that I don't specifically rinse the alum off.
@Jayaruh uses alum, witch hazel, and then an aftershave with his shaves. There are probably others who use both (like Adam, above). I use witch hazel mixed with some splash for a little scent, followed by balm. I tried alum once and didn't care for it. As for irritation - you'd just have to experiment and see how your skin reacts.
I was using both alum and witch hazel for a while but I have recently stopped using the alum and have notices that my face doesn't dry out as bad as when I use it.
The difference between the Thayers toners and astringents is simply that the astringents contain some alcohol and the toners don't. The inclusion of the alcohol will make the astringents slightly more drying and a bit more likely to sting, although I have used both and truthfully don't notice much difference. I usually do cold rinse, alum, clean up razor and brush, cold rinse off alum, dry, Thayers WH, let it dry, and then an aftershave or balm if I want it.
I have transferred my Thayers into a small spray bottle. After shaving, I give a few sprays and immediately apply the alum. The wetness of the Thayers "activates" the alum. I let it all sit for a few minutes and then wipe it off and apply Osage Rub then my aftershave.
I use Thayers w/ Aloe after every shave, let it dry, then splash on AS. I have an alum block but I don't use it much anymore. I felt like it dried out my face a lot. I still use it occasionally tho to check out how good my technique was and skin stretching
I also don't reach for the alum block much anymore. When I first started I thought Thayers WH was too expensive since you can get a bottle of generic for $1, but once I tried Thayers I use it quite a bit. The bottle will last a long time and there are several flavors to choose from. Lucky Tiger is another great post shave product.
I never had a need for Thayer's. I use good aftershaves, and occasionally...if I have a new razor, razor blade, or if I just don't use a good angle...I will use alum and then aftershave.
I am an alum block adherent. But I also use a moisturizer after that, then AS. Seems to work okay for me. But as always in this thing of ours, YMMV.
I have never used alum. I don't see the point. Post shave I apply Witch Hazel then apply a ASB. YMMV.
I have Thayers with Aloe but seldom use it. I have never used alum. My usual routine is to apply a post shave balm (have three but usually use Nivea) and then a splash of after shave. I have a small assortment of after shaves which I rotate through depending on the soap used. Below is what I have/use. Over time - I'm sure I'll add a few more after shave scents.
Bot Both are recent arrivals. Only used them a couple times. Both are very nice but I really like the Bay Rum. Plus they are healthy sized bottles.
