I had the privilege of going to the barbershop today, and my oh my. I received a medium fade with a long top, hair styled, lined around the ears and neck with a shavette and hot shaving cream, mustache line up, and shaved my neck my couple days growth. (I'm maintaining a beard with a shaven neck.). All of this was done for $13.00! Even applied some clubman to my head after the shavette shave. It was truly a delightful experience. My question is, what do you look for in a barber?
Well, here's a picture of my Barber. She always has some sort of homemade cookies laid out for the customers, and she never messes up my haircut. All I could ask for. She's also married, unfortunately.
My (now) barber, wasn't very talkative, but he didn't cut corners on time, there were a couple other guys waiting and he spent 30 minutes on my cut!
A guy who listens to what I want and actually does it, will go back a keep cutting if it's not what I want yet, good conversation, make me feel at ease, full experience, trim eyebrows, nose and ear hairs, line up around ears and neck with hot lather, powdered Clubman brush afterwards. All this and he only charges $15. But I tip him well, usually $5. Hard to find a really good barber.
My barber is one of the new school type guys with tattoos and stuff. He looks the part of a trendy barber I guess. Doesn't matter too much to me I suppose as long as I get superior cuts.
Before I started to shave my head I went to a Asian Salon type place, I always had the same lady cut my hair and she did a fantastic job. My sons still go to her and she still says to them every time "where's your daddy"? Good hair cut, trim the eyebrows, message my neck, great price.
This.^ Conversation I can do without. Just listen to what I want and execute it. And be skilled enough to do it right. I'm not a learning cut. Also, be good enough to me that if I come up with something a little off, tell me that it won't really work for me. I've come to prefer the "new school" types... they seem tremendously skilled and very fussy (in a good way) about getting it perfect. I don't mind the extra time in the chair or the wait in line knowing that I'm going to get a great cut. And neck shave and eyebrow grooming.
Been going to the same guy for over 10 years. Wouldn't keep going back if he did a poor job. Does everything right - trims eyebrows and ear hair, lathers and shaves around the ears and the back of my neck with a shavette. For some reason he refuses to trim my 'stache! He's afraid he'll ruin it!! Great guy to chat with; talks just enough, not too much, as some do. $17 with a $5 tip. Worth it all.
I'm curious... how do you get away with a beard in the military? I thought it was mustaches only or clean shaven.
I am actually out of the military now, I got out on December 17th unexpectedly. That's the reason I haven't been around much. Trying to find a job. However, the military does give out shaving profiles for those who get bad razor burn and bumps. They can grow 1/4 of an inch of facial hair I believe, but they are not aloud to shape it at all.
If i get a chance at a dream den id like it to have an old school barber shop feel complete with the chairs but thats a long way off. I think it would be cool to go to barber school for a side gig or an enjoyable trade for retirement age
