I’ll be doing a tournament of DE razors that are considered beginner friendly to see which one will reign supreme. I’ll do a side by side shave for each matchup and video the results. The constant variables are that the blade of choice is going to be Rapira Platinum Lux, soap of choice Antiga Barbearia De Bairro and brush of choice is Maggard Razors Faux Garnite Handle 26mm synthetic. Here’s the lineup for round one.
I thought about adding a Tech but I thought that I already had 3 Gillette razors in the lineup so I thought that was enough.
Gotcha. When I think good starter razor, the Tech comes to mind. I have started a number of friends on the DE path with one.
40s S.S. They can appreciate the vintage quality and, with a good blade, the efficient and pleasant shave.
On the Gillette I'd have a flare tip super speed vs. a 3pc tech. Reason being the likelihood of someone finding either not on ebay is very good unlike the the others unless you happen to be in fertile junking grounds. I would have also added the Van Der Hagen razor since it is carried by Walmart. If someone decided to impulse buy a safety razor that is one of the most likely ones.
If the OP is looking for the most comfortable shave, I would have to agree that the PAA DOC is probably going to lead the pack. We don't know what the OP is looking for in his shave. I do have to commend Angelo on picking a nearly ideal set of "newbie recommended" razors. I'd replace the Heritage or the DE89 with a tech, since the heads are near identical... But that's me.
I’m judging the razors on the following criteria: comfort, closeness, efficiency and how smooth my face feels at the end.
i have some thoughts on that..being that they are blade holders, they should all give a decent shave with proper technique.however some offer more safety than others..others could be too mild as well for some hair types..
With what's on the list, I'd go for either of the Gillette Super Speeds. But I would also add in a Tech.
would be cool, but your choice.the heritage and other new gillette is a muhle/jagger head so it's good but doesn't represent a true gillette basic standard..please don't let my opinion alter your objective..
All depends on what is the routine. I've skin issues, so I need a three passes technique. I find this is the best way a newbie should learn how to shave properly. It's the most efficient strategy. Depth is all about the number of passes. In daily use, the mild DOC would be my choice. I've the Yaqi 1712 with aluminum handle, that is similar. Very nice, gives me a long lasting BBS every time. And it's easy to use, even for a beginner. I find it beautiful too.
Angelo. My suggestion is to ignore our suggestions and run with your tournament and report your findings.
The easiest razor I've ever shaved with was a Gillette Old Type. BBS with zero irritation during my first week of wet shaves. I miss that razor.
