The Gillette NEW.... what's next?

    I love my 1930's NEW... shave's wonderfully....

love it more than my 1960's adjustable Slim (set at 3)...

well.... the reason I love the NEW over the Slim is because of the ease the NEW shaves under the nose.... the Slim is tricky by comparison!

So the question is, if I love the NEW and would like to expand my limited collection, what vintage razor should I purchase next?

    Thanks!

What have you already got? What looks interesting to you?

There are so many great vintage razors out there. Unless you want to go full bore collector and get several display cabinets, you'll have to forgo something.:signs002.

The old style ones are cool too. I have a cheap 1920s Pocket Edition with a cracked handle that I mended with epoxy. Still shaves fine. Also a single ring from 1910, in excellent condition. Haven't shaved with it yet, but am looking forward to it.

Do you have any single edge razors yet? :D

    Nice collection!

I have the NEW short comb.. that I plan of re-plating sometime soon!

I like the 3 piece units myself, although have got nothing against the TTO either..

the Tech might be the next one!

yes, a Tech it will be!

Now, that is one seriously nice handle.... how does a noob like me go about getting one like that?

1930's New, 1960's Slim... and a Tech from fleabay soon enough

Single edge? you mean straight razors? If so, yes, I have a couple of old W&B straights (restored and honed)... that I'm not quite ready to try... loving the simplistic joy of DE!

Usually when we speak of single edge razors, we are not talking straights, but razors made by Gem, Ever-Ready, and Star to name the most popular ones.

Here is a picture of the ever popular Gem 1912 model:

    Ah! That single edge!

For some reason I seem to have no 'connection' when looking at a SE...

I guess the whole reason I love DE has to do with the memory of my grandfather... who was a DE and Straight user!

Yep, that's what I meant, although technically Schick Injectors, and even single blade Bic disposables also have single cutting edges.:D

Seriously, rockrabbit, consider getting at least one Gem or Ever Ready. They tend to be underappreciated and cheap, so you won't be risking much. You can probably find one for under $10, and get a pack of blades at Walgreens for $5.

Great advice. Getting a SE razor such as the 1912 GEM. Pricing might be a bit higher but still way under what you would pay for a similar shaving condition DE razor.

As for the blades, when you look in Walgreens or other pharmacy look for the GEM by Personna SE blades. They are by far the best you can get in the stores.

The big thing here though is your very sound advice about getting the SE razor. I did that and now find myself using the SE as much as my DE razors and enjoying the shave experience much more than that with a DE razor.

Another vote for a SE, whether GEM style or Injector, though some think the Injector is its own type .. the experimentation is what has been fun for me

The obvious choice is the old style. They are plentiful, affordable, and usually only need a cleaning and maybe a little glue on the barrel.

They are smooth and wonderful shavers.

    Nuff said.

I'd recommend the pre-design change Muehle Pinsky R89. It's open comb. It's aggressive. Paired with the right blade, it shaves like a dream.

Yes, it isn't vintage, although the Fatip head MP R89 isn't produced anymore so it's somewhere between vintage and modern production.

This is Tech week for me... next week will be NEW Long week!

The NEW short that I have I :love029
