Hey guys, I'm really interested in the razor below, a Goodfellows' Smile Valynor razor. This particular razor is probably very polarizing because of its looks, where some will like it while other won't, but I fall in the like it very much category. It certainly is different and IMHO, pretty darn handsome. My problem with this razor is the brass pieces because they will likely patina, and then I might not think it's very handsome. I know you can clean brass, but that could get tedious and even be smelly. So what do you guys think of this razor overall, and am I worrying over nothing concerning the patina?
I'm not a fan. The brass will be easy enough to clean. Soft towel wipe down after every use and it'll be fine. My concern would be the shell collecting scum in all those crevices.
Thanks for the response. Yeah, you could have a point. I like they way you can take it apart to give it a good cleaning though. I'd probably have to drop this razor in the ultrasonic cleaner more often than my others and use a soft brush to clean her up. Such is the cost of having such a unique style razor I guess. I still wonder about the brass, especially being it will be getting wet often enough. But maybe all it takes is a quick wipe down as you said. Intriguing razor!
I wouldnt worry about cleaning. A Toothbrush and a brush used to clean reusable straws will make it easy to keep clean.
Yeah, cleaning won't be the deciding factor here. It'll be shave quality and if I really love the aesthetics of the razor, which I do. Anyone have any experience with this razor?
I finally pulled the trigger on a Valynor. I really shopped around for something in this price range give or take 20 or $30, but I didn't see to much that blew me away. This Valynor, in my eyes, is just to uniques and handsome to pass up. Looks like a much more expensive razor and I think they did a nice job on keeping the price so reasonable. It gets good reviews as a neutral, non-aggresive shaver, like a 4/10, so I think that will fit my shaving style. My old Schick Krona is likely a close comparison and that razor never fails to give me a nice effortless shave. So we'll see. I'll do a review when I get it, if anyone cares. But there doesn't seem to be to many reviews on this forum.
Congrats Jim. I look forward to your review. No problem keeping it clean enough with daily rinses, a soft tooth brush and periodic baths in Scrubbing Bubbles. A little patina on the brass will look good. I just hope the Krona does not feel too dejected once she discovers you're not a one-razor-man.
Thank you! LOL! Yes, the Krona might play second fiddle, but who knows, that darned thing consistently gives me my best shaves. I also think a little patina will look good and tone it down just a touch. I'm excited with this purchase!
So I received the Valynor today! First she is a beauty in my eyes. Pretty stunning design. Took it apart and the construction looks very good with everything buttoning up tight. The razor has a heft to it, but more of a cruiserweight instead of a heavyweight. The handle is perfect. It's a great length, with 3 fingers on the handle and the pinky under the butt end. Nice! The grip is amazing. I loaded it up with a Treet blade and began. The first pass was very nice and effortless, and I was comfortable moving pretty quickly. No pressure needed. I probably could have stopped after the first pass and some touch-up, but I went for BBS, so I went for a second pass and some touch-up and it left me very smooth, no irritation or nicks. So I'm very satisfied for my first shave with her! I can't find any criticism except maybe it's not the most efficient razor I own? My Schick Krona still is number 1 in my stable, but not by much. They are rather equal in most respects. Overall this razor fights above it's weight for the price. It's nicely priced between cheap and expensive. And darn if it doesn't look good in the Den!
