The transformation of old crusty to something nice is fun. Let's see some before and after pics, whether it's just cleaning, plating or repairs. Now go get your shine box.
Amazing what lies under other peoples crud. I enjoy the process of bringing the shine up. Vintage Gillettes Rock!
Hello folks, here is a restoration I did just this morning. The razor arrived around 10:30am, and it is now almost 12:00pm. It's amazing what you can do to one of these sets in an hour and a half. Here's a couple before photos- And here are some after shots, I think it came back to life just great. Thanks for your interest.
Hello Mbg75, I lined the tray in the lower half of the box with some felt I picked up at Hancock Fabric store, a few days ago in anticipation of this project. The store had the exact color I needed. I haven't polished the exterior of the case yet, because I ran out of Armor-All. However I got the razor to shine nicely. All that took was a soak in hot water, and a little elbow grease with a mild toothbrush. I soaked it with Dawn dish detergent. I hope this input helps. also I used 3M photo safe adhesive spray to attach the felt to the tray. It works really well.
It kinda baffles me why some sellers don' even attempt to clean these up. It seems the clean ones on the bay bring more $ than what effort it takes to clean them. Don't get me wrong here; I'm not complaining
I don't shop online for my vintage gear. I have found plenty in antique shops & flea markets. Couple minutes with a toothbrush and Dawn liquid, A Q-tip & Mothers polish? Turned several $5.00 cruddy old things into $50.00 Vintage Razors. It's the thrill of the hunt, finding a gem in the rough and shining it up that makes my gear interesting.
It's definitely enjoyable turning what looks like a piece of junk back into a glorious razor. Yes, you never know what gems are under all of the crud!
