    Hi,

Newbie here, just getting into wet shaving.

I was at a thrift store today and saw what I thought couldn't be anything else but a shaving scuttle. But this one was sleek, porcelain, precise and German made; different than the earthenware ones that I've seen, like the Moss Scuttle or the Dirty Bird. I bought it.

When I got home, I did some research. What I found isn't a scuttle, but a thermal gravy boat. The design and concept are essentially the same, though. There's a chamber surrounding the cup that holds hot water, in this case about 9 ounces worth, which keeps the contents of the cup warm. You can see the fill hole right at the top where the handle meets the body.

The company that makes it is called BMF, a German firm.

OK, it's a gravy boat, but I'm going to try it out as a shaving scuttle.

I'm not knowledgable about ceramics, but is porcelain more or less insulating than earthenware? This vessel is designed to keep gravy warm, but gravy is already hot when put into the boat, shaving cream is not. A lot of coffee and tea cups I've used have been made out of porcelain, though, so maybe porcelain is alright in terms of heat retention?

Also, it has no ridges on the bottom of the cup or on the walls. Will I have a hard time whipping up lather? I was thinking of placing some sort of ridged silicon disc, like a drink coaster, on the bottom of the cup in case I need some ridges for producing lather.

    What do you think?

I'm a newbie, so I'm expecting my first wet shaving kit this Christmas. When I'm set up, I'll give the gravy boat a try and post my observations.

    Thanks,
    K.T.

IMHO, if it works, you like it, use it! Most lathering bowls/mugs don't have ridges in the bottom of them. That's a dandy gravy boat btw. I'm sure it will work out fine for a scuttle. I can't imagine why not. I'm sure someone else will come along and tell us I'm wrong. Welcome to TSD!

Howdy here as well. Many lather mugs, scuttles do indeed have spiral ridges,
cross hatching and so forth that some claim help transfer heat and aid in lather production. Just for starters there's Dity Bird pottery, Georgetown Scuttle, the list goes on. Goggle is your friend. ;)
