Nice addition to my butterscotch hotel. A Adoration, C-Mon Deluxe and a no name. All three test positive for Bakelite and are in excellent condition. The no name interestingly is oval, not round and has a dyed boar knot. Been waiting for some time for a good Adoration in butterscotch, I already have the cherry and spinach Bakelite

How exactly do you test for Bakelite?

When you get them warm by rubbing them they smell of formaldehyde or camphor.

    Or

Dampen a cotton swab with 409 and rub it gently on the inside of the item being tested. If it is bakelite, the swab will turn yellow.

Thank you everyone for the kind words

I can fairly well tell by looking and touch. I confirm if it’s Bakelite/catalin using simicrome test. Very small dap on a small rag rubbed on surface. If positive, you will end up with a tobacco juice colored spot on rag. Does not matter what is the color of the Bakelite, positive is always tobacco juice. I also polish with simicrome, does a great gob. I will do a rub test if pressed for time. I don’t like the 409 test. Ammonia can stain if not removed.

When you get smell of formaldehyde on rub test it’s Bakelite
When you get smell of camphor on rub test it’s Celluloid

Even though Bakelite and catalin are two different items, I considere them the same
