Hello to all I know I am a newbe here my name I go by is jmbullman, I am a professional knife sharpener as that is how I feed my family and I also sharpen straight razors own a couple dovos and a zwilling. My question is I am very used to Japanese naturals and am about to pull the trigger on a thurigan from TT does anyone have any experience with these or should I go with the coticule any help would be greatly appreciated and this looks like a very professional site with knowledgable people and that's why I am here. Thanks and peace to all jmbullman
Contact Glen (gssixgun). He is our go to guy on all these matters. http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/gemstar-customs-august-offerings.29898/#post-525622 Oh and one more thing ... Welcome to the Den. We know you'll fit right in. So grab yourself a comfy chair, and give our threads a spin! Burma Shave
Thuringians (Vintage) are prized. But, like any natural stone they have variations on performance and there are no dead set guarantees. I only have experience with a Coticule and it is a fantastic stone, no arguing that, my only regret was not being able to afford one that is 3" wide. I use it as a finisher after running my razors on my Naniwa 3/8k combo stone, and it does a great job.
I have been useing a ozuka asagi natural for my finishing stone on my zwilling and talk about sharp, I have the complete set of shaptons both pro and gs's along with Morton's, naniwas up to a snow white and every arky ever made plus numerious Japanese naturals. Not bragging just listing I am a super guy who loves to help and give help where needed I am a mod over at Cktg and was one at ff before it tanked. Thanks jmbullman
IMO you won't be getting a noticable difference going from J-Nat to Thuringian. Heck depending on the specific Japanese stones, I would take them over any bloody coticule to boot lol. This would definitely be a thread for gssixgun and Jamie though, because they're the resident honemeisters, I just do my own because I can. Welcome to TSD
Thanks the only thing missing is a good quality coticule I have one but I got it at a yard sale and I don't believe it is one hard as a rock no yellow swarf so I am one of those guys that lean toward different things like a thurigan to give my customers a different feel and it actually makes me look good with a different variety so maybe I will go for a good cotuicle unless someone tells me to forget the thurigan. Peace jmbullman. Btw I also have a han han stone and if your not familiar with one they go up to about 15k and are very hard to find but very well worth it works great on knifes to if someone is interested in j-nats or a han han which is a composite Japanese I will give you the guys name and number
Thanks guys I am sure I will love it here after thinking about it last note before making a hasty decision I decided to pull the plug on a real coticule and got a nice 7 inch superior grade stone, it will benefit my knife business as well do I have to wait by the (excuse me) dam mailbox waiting to see if the postal service can do its job while the Dnc is going on on my town. Fun fun. Waiting, waiting, still waiting.... This wait is the toughest part. Thanks for all the advice guys it was extremely helpful in my decision. Peace jmbullman
By TT I am assuming that you mean Timber Tools, their Thuringens get different reviews from ok for razors to plain terrible because of the inclusions.. As you proabably already are aware any natural varies greatly and it all depends on the one you get,, Vintage Thuringens are a much better bet for razors Escher or E&Co.
