To chrome, or not to chrome?

    That is the question.

I've always wanted to try it. I don't really have any good reason to headshave, other than that I think it sounds nice in the summer. I have a damn big head, though. Size 8 3/4, for those of you who know what that means. How odd would it be for a college student with a giant noggin and a full head of hair to go chrome? Is there any way for me to tell if my head is going to be all gross and lumpified once I take the hair off?

If you're on the bubble, you might try a buzz cut first. You'll have a better idea what it will be like without going all the way. You might also read through the link in my signature.

aberneth, I would think this time of the season would be best to give a try to shaving the dome. If it looks undesirable to you, wear a cap to keep the grape warm in the cold until your hair grows back out. I have often wondered how I would look, but have been talked out of it by SWMBO. And, I admit to not having large enough stones to follow through with it, with or without the blessing of the wife. Good luck!

I buzz my head with the '1' clipper and love it. Not sure I would ever go bald, but it's totally a personal preference. I love being able to cut my own hair and don't have to worry about spending $15 every week or two to get my hair cut.

Regarding how odd it would be for a student to do this? Who cares. If you want to do it, more power to you.

I use the smallest guard on my clippers which is 1/16th of an inch. I don't believe they make one that can cut shorter. I've not been brave enough to shave it yet.

sol92258 I have no earthly idea

    A) you're in college, lots of your peers have tried/are trying/will try much stranger things than shaving their head, so if you feel an inclination to try it, go for it.

    B) Like Erik said, if you have some doubts, try the buzzcut first, and see what you think. And definitely read his thread about it, good advice there

    C) Like Southernscribbler, I've wanted to shave my head for a long time, but my wife is a roadblock. Unfortunately (for her), nature is doing it for me at a rapid rate, so it's either unsightly patches of bad hair for a long time, a the band-aid approach and get it over quickly.
I'm very highly considering it this year, though...

    D) I've heard it said before (I think Micah shared this with me) to consider the time of year and weather for the first time, and it makes sense. You don't want to do it close to Summer, as you're scalp will be making it's first appearance to the Summer sun, and you'll either 1) blind others with your snow-white scalp, and/or have the potential of serious sunburn.
And you don't want to start when it's still very cold, since much of your body heat escapes through your head.
Makes sense to me. If I go through with it this year, it's going to be just as it starts to warm up so I can start getting exposure to the sun slowly, but not as hot, to get the skin acclimated.

I'll add it to a growing list of things to do before I go to grad school :happy102

Before I go chrome, though, I have to grow my hair out long enough to use hair tonic and have it be worth a damn.

I'd toyed with the idea of shaving off my perfectly good head of hair for some time. I've been wearing my hair short since I was 21 (20 yrs ago).
Then, I dumped the FUsion for the DE last March. A month later, I got bored while my wife was at the store. I took the clippers and Gillette Adjustable to it.
I haven't shaved it in about a month, because I've been lazy.
I use a hand held mirror to enable me to see the back of my tater.

I remember the first day of Marine bootcamp lo those many years ago being surprised at what my bald head (and everyone else's) looked like. In particular I remember a black guy with some very odd wrinkles in his skin. Didn't get a chance to actually touch my head for a couple days (hard to imagine if you haven't been there/done that, but someone is watching you every second), but I would lay in bed at night (at attention, of course) discretely rubbing the back of my head on the pillow to try to get a sense of it. :happy102

I just picked up a Headblade Sport, on the way home from work today. My boss shaves his head, too, and recommended one.
Except for the 4 spots on the back of my head where I cut myself (my fault), I love it.

I started shaving the nugget about 8 years ago.
Once I got a little color on my head, I will never ever ever go back to having hair.

I use a gillette adjustable, and wilkinson sword blades.
a brush with Body Shop mens maca root cream.

love it, wonderful combination of supplies, available locally for me.
    15 minutes every other day.

    clean and smooth.

I've been a cueball since I was 22, that's 15 years now. That said tho, I started losing my hair when I was 19 (stupid genes), and it was getting to the point where my attempts to hide it were getting pathetic.

I'm old and married now, but I tell you this - a shaved head, at least back in the late 90s, got a LOT of attention in bars. Probably not so much, since it's more common now, but there's nothing like having little hotties coming up to you and asking if they can "touch it".

Words to live by, right there.

Amen to that you had to beat them off with a stick if you were just average looking.

It will certainly look different, especially in the mirror initially. But you and others who see it will adjust quickly. I began to shave my head in my early 40's when male pattern baldness appeared and I decided that no hair would look better than a flimsy mess with a hole in it. Like other posters, I tried clippers, aiming for a very short buzz cut, but soon decided to go all the way. I shave my head with a Norelco-type rotary before shaving my face with a DE. The electric razor leaves just enough stubble to cut any glare, thus avoiding the shiny head produced by blades. Some of the benefits are described above. To them, I would add no further need to endure the barber experience that includes waiting in mixed company, usually sitting in a chair warmed by the posterior of its most recent occupant and having somebody I don't know well messing around my head and neck with sharp things.

Ugg I used one of those on my noggin before, left it very dry. de and time right now, I can shave my 7 and 3/4 melon in about 20 mins, used to be about 15 minutes with the Fusion, so I am not complaining.

yeah... it tanks having a size 8 3/4. However, hats fit a little better when chrome. OSFA hats are still super tight, but almost wearable.

Chrome didn't work so well for me. But still going to keep using the closest guard on the clipper.
