I'd like to post my review of the 14 different scents of TOBS here to help those looking to buy some and get some feedback from the vets out there. All of these will be conducted with my G12 scuttle and my whipped dog 20mm silvertip brush. I used the Jermyn Street sample today and was amazed at how good it smelled. In the container, the scent was faint. As soon as I transferred the cream into my scuttle, the lather and scent exploded. It smelled of a really nice cologne that I wouldn't mind wearing on a daily basis. Not the typical soapy smell I'm used to, for sure. Cologne scented shaving cream with the luxurious, creamy, lather ability of TOBS-Count me in. I really liked this cream and will put it on my to buy list.
I used Mr. Taylor today and the scent was reminiscent of old timey barber shop with a hint of masculinity. A very abundant lather, rich, creamy, cushiony. It was what I expect out of a TOBS cream. Definitely a good scent, I may keep this one around. It wasn't very distinct like Jermyn Street was shaving with cologne, it was more of a subtle manly scent.
In the sample pack I have I also found the James to be a very nice scent just more subtle then the Jermyn. I found myself wanting the James to linger around longer than it did.
Thanks for posting and updating this. I have a TSD sampler coming with several TOBS creams in it. Hoping to see it by tomorrow....
I like TOBS. It does everything well for me. I can spend more money on cream but as far as performance TOBS fulfills all my requirements.
I'll keep it up as I go through each cream. I only shave once a day, so two weeks I'll be updating this once a day with my review. I hope it will help some people wondering what each performs and smells like when they are considering buying an entire tub.
I used shave shop today and noticed a citrusy smell to it. Like a subtle lemon smell. It was nice, but not what I was expecting from something called shave shop. Lathered just like TOBS should
I used Lavender today. The cream itself is purple and the resulting creamy lather is mostly white with a hint of pink. It smells floral and while it isn't bad, I just cant dig flowers on my face. Great lather and cushion as is to be expected, floral smelling purple cream just ain't my style.
I used Lime today. It smelled very sweet and limey. Almost like key lime pie. It wasn't an extreme smell, nor was it a very sour lime smell. Just soft, subtle, sweet lime. Maybe someone else will like this, because YMMV just like everything else, but not for me.
Here are my notes from my 14 scent sampler: Rose Wow – Really like. Might be too strong (save 1/3 for rose/lavender mix) Lavender Softer than rose. Very, very nice. Very Luxurious (save 1/3 for rose/lavender mix) Rose with lavender Outragous! Magnificent. Rose is more powerful smell than lavender – suggest a 2 lavender to 1 rose ratio if you have ample supply. This is way better than either the rose or the lavender separately. Cocoanut Not impressed. O.K., but not great (save 1/3 for cocoanut/lemon-lime mix) Lemon-lime Don’t like - citrus based smell (save 1/3 for cocoanut/lemon-lime mix) Cocoanut with lemon-lime Don’t like – Citrus based smell, you would like if you like citrus. This comes off more “citrusy” than just Lemon-Lime or Cocoanut separately. This is another example of how combinations improve beyond the separate parts. Eton College Don’t like – another citrus based smell – I just don’t like citrus Almond Love it – nice, sweet, not too powerful (was my favorite before lavender) Avocado O.K. – not a lot of scent, but nice – seems more smooth on face Sandalwood O.K. – BUT AOS sandalwood is much nicer & more powerful scent Jermyn Street O.K. – nothing remarkable Mr. Taylor’s O.K. – only a HINT of citrus, which I actually liked. Smooth on the face Shaving Shop Not much of a smell – ok St. James This one surprised me. There is a flower base mixed with (maybe?) a mint? Very refreshing. I would buy. Sensitive skin I am unsure if this is supposed to be smoother, or just unscented for those whose skin reacts to scents. The scent, which is very, very faint, resembles soap. This MAY have been nicer to my face than others, but not by much. It did not seem exceptionally smooth or calming to the face. Maybe it is only the lack of scent that distinguishes it.
Grapefruit: This stuff is absolutely fruity. I thought it smelled strong in the sample jar, but I was shown how strong and perfumery a fruity scent this stuff can produce when I whipped up the lather. It just bloomed and when I was applying it to my face it was overbearing. If you like your face smelling like fruity women's body spray or the inside of Bath and Body Works Sampler Section on Black Friday, than this is for you. Or a nice choice for a woman DE shaver. Pass. Coconut: This was a very lightly scented coconut that was sweet and subtle. I barely smelled the pleasing aroma whilst applying to my face, but when I did, I actually liked it. It wasn't in your face coconut, and it wasn't smelling of sun tan lotion or pina colada. It was like Coconut Cream Pie. Nice smell, but probably not a daily driver.
Avocado: Smells like an old woman in a retirement home. Like lotion, cheap perfume, and makeup. Some scents are for different people, however, and YMMV as always. For me, this is an offensive scent and I couldn't wait to put on a masking aftershave.
I use Sandal Wood and it smells fantastic! Then I have the Lemon-lime also and its amazing, smells like I put a margarita on my face!
Everyone can send their unwanted Lavender TOBS to me. I will be happy to dispose of them. Come to think of it, I will take Rose, also.
It was a sampler pack, so only a small little jar with about two shaves worth inside. I PIF'd the last little bit to my convert at work. But if I had a whole tub, I would have sent it to you.
Cool, great reading everyone's impressions. Just yesterday I ordered the TOBS sampler from Fendrihan, really looking forward to it!
Have only tried their aftershave gel so far so this will be my first go at the cream. Will be interesting if I'll be a convert from my current favourite, which is Speick.
This is how myself and the wife felt about eton college. Thought it smelled like that old over made up lady that crop dusts the air with her perfume when she walks by... let's just say she wouldn't get near me that night, and the shave was a struggle.
