Has anyone jumped on this Global Shave Club Toggle replica deal? I went ahead and did so we'll see how it turned out in April when they are supposed to hit the initial buyers. https://globalshave.club/blog/f/the...lobalshave_club/blog/f_rss&utm_term=Read+More
I own an actual 1958 Gillette Toggle and love using it. I’ve never bought from GSC before but from what I’ve heard on their past models the build quality leaves a lot to be desired.
The biggest problem I have (had) with GSC is that they used to leave stock photos of the actual Gillette razor up as the actual product. I see they have finally updated the pictures of the Fatboy and replaced them with actual pictures of the Fatguy. Take a good look at those, then compare to a real Fatboy. I expect the Toggle to be similar. Think Weishi adjustable with a superficial resemblance to the original. If you are okay with that, more power to you.
I have only been aware of the Fat Guy, and those were mixed reviews. I just figured I spend more money on that than a box of cubans, and it would be interesting to see what they come up with.
I had noticed that "not putting the actual razor" photo business as well. I think they do that prior to having an actual physical razor finished.
Considering what Toggles do go for these days which is in $300 - $400 range without a case not $800 like they claim, it is not a bad price crowd funded price or regular price in comparison. If you don't like it unless it is total turd of a build you should be able to flip it for retail later on down the line if you do back the crowd funding and that is successful.
I did go ahead and pony up. They have communicated that they anticipate delivery in April. I believe they had limited the production to 300, but did not get 300 takers. We’ll see how it turns out.
They certainly do, and also for at least a year afterwards too; or at least they did. Don't rightly know how they run their business these days. Edit: correction. They would use original razors for the product pictures. Once the actual razor came out, a poor quality photo of the actual 'replica' was added at the end of the pictures. Now, they include high quality photos of the actual razor they manufacture (have manufactured for them, I should say). Edit 2: After looking closely at their razors, I'm pretty sure that Pearl is the manufacturer. I'm open to other suggestions though.
So here is the link to the original crowdfunding opportunity: https://globalshave.club/shop/ols/p...campaign-for-our-1958-gillette-toggle-replica Not trying to advertise, so if this is a violation slap my wrist now. Interesting notes on the razor: Here is What You Need to Know About Our Replica: it will be an authentic replication. the GSC Toggle is being made by CNC machining. It features the same shave and blade gaps as the original It is plated in Chrome. It will be made of solid brass and feature a stainless steel handle, and frame. This increases the tensile strength many fold over the original, so our replica will actually be more durable than the original. It is being manufactured in Pakistan but it will be assembled / packaged in Montreal, Canada. It will be delivered in late winter or early spring. I know stainless steel is CNC machinable, as well as aluminum, can brass be cnc machined? Looks like the casting/CNC machining is being done in Pakistan and assembly in Canada. Like I said earlier, for me it's just another thing to try with this hobby. I have very little experience with modern razors other than EJ DE89, the Gillette Heritage, and Merkur. Most everything I use is vintage. I tried one REALLY high end modern razor, and was gravely disappointed. Maybe this will be a decent homage, maybe not. As far as GSC, looks like they merged with someone recently. I get some of the stuff they do, the Super Speed and Tech Replicas, as well as the Fat Guy and Toggle replica. I don't get the Muhle, and EJ homages they are making. Not sure I see the market for a Muhle Clone, when I can buy current production of those razors for a few dollars more...
if successful it would be cool if they continued production on a small basis.,not just another limited run razor for the chosen few to gloat about or to resell at inflated prices.
Maybe I'll pony up, buy the rest up, and put on ebay one by one with a single pic and the description just saying "adjustable razor, looks like a Gillette toggle?". That ought to be fun. You've been warned! Lofl! Kidding aside, I don't care for knock off anything...
I don't care for knock-off stuff either, but for a razor that is really rare like the toggle, I made an exception. The toggle is one that affordability doesn't matter, there just are not alot of good examples out there all the time. My Yacht Master and Submariner were easier to find. Heck, I can even find Turn-o-graph Thnderbirds easier than I can find Toggles.
Plenty of ridiculously priced toggles out there on ebay and etsy. For only $1,400 you can get a really nice one lol. What i don't get is how a modern razor like a bbs1 goes over $1,000 and I can't seem to sell an out of production 1951 executive. SMH
EXACTLY! Something new and no longer in production. Those who spent a few hundred on a new one rave about it.
Okay, a simple google turned one up: "Final price reduction: $1400 shipped CONUS. It will not go lower. It not sold at this price the razor will just be put into storage, because its value will keep increasing." Sorry, but there are not enough of us shave nerds out there to make a statement such as that. Most of the world would call our obsession a fetish, not a hobby.
Guess maybe I'll be kicking myself when I have to spend $2,000 on one lol. Bottom dial or some new fangled stainless knock off of a classic?...hmmm, such a hard decision!
