On Monday afternoon I had the pleasure to experience a true Turkish shave, well at least as close as I could get without boarding the night bird to Istanbul at Kennedy. Paterson N.J. is a Turkish enclave where on Main St Turk flags hang off the utility poles and nearly all the business’ are Middle Eastern or a minute amount Hispanic. I entered the shop complete with a satellite feed of Turkish T.V. and two friends of the barber hanging around sipping coffee. Thank god they were there since the young one could interpret for me. I could tell I was getting the “what’s this guy doing here” I was lathered with a giant professional barber brush, and shaved twice with a straight razor. As a shavephile I tried to see the blade but could not. I was embarrassed to ask as well. The shave ended with a generous amount of Turk Lemon cologne which I have acquired through my travels of this North Jersey Kasbah, and a massage of Arko skin cream, also which I have, but would never of used it in this manner. This shave could last me, an Italian male with a heavy beard, about two days it was that close and smooth. And all for a whopping eight bucks
You are describing exactly our Traditional berbers in Turkey.. so lovely to hear good experience with our berbers. Greetings.
In Bulgaria, most barbers here are turkish. I`m was in Istanbul, Edrine, Bursa, and they have so good barbershops, and shaves with Sedef razors with disposable blades. They looks that . I`m have another one, and this razor shave like real straight.
Me too, I was in Istanbul, Ankara, as well as Edrine, and the barbers were using those razors. They were also very professional, and knew how to make a man look and feel great. If I had to get a shave again from a barber, it would have to be from a Turkish barber.
I'd love to check that out. I work in neighboring Saddle Brook. Where abouts on Main St was the barber?
