So I picked up what I thought was a gem open comb razor in the case from an antique shop only to bring it home start cleaning it up it has a Gillette stamp on the base plate with no numbers. Its a 3 piece open comb with a ball tip on the bottom of the handle. When I typed the description into Google it brought me to the exact same razor I have but no model anyone have any ideas on what my $5 investment is model wise?
It's a 1930's Gillette New Type ball end handle open comb double edge safety razor. Uncertain of particular model without the serial number. Find that and you can find the particular model or close to. A lot of them looked a lot alike. I couldn't find a photo that showed the ball end without knurling, as in the ebay photo. A GEM looks very different and is a single edge blade razor that uses the GEM blades that look like box cutting blades, but uses the ones from your drugstore and not the hardware store. The GEMs has a "lid" that closed onto the rectangular blade. Here's a GEM razor. I think it's the 1912.
Thanks there's no serial number just the Gillette stamp and made in USA stamp. It does have a long crack in the handle that I epoxied on the inside of the tube. Definitely cleaning up nice I can't wait to try it out. Thanks for the help definitely worth five bucks IMO and now I own a vintage gem case to go with it.
I have a Gillette Bostonian from the 1930's without a serial number as well. I've read here http://gillettedatecodes.com/ that once King Gillette no longer ran things, they stopped the serial numbers...in 1931 . Then they added letters codes in 1931 for the year. 1 through 4 codes for the quarter of the year manufactured was added to the year code in 1951. Now you need a GEM for the GEM case.
I have a few GEMs myself and wouldn't turn a case down, unless you want open it up to the forum in another thread.
I just put it in the thread first come first serve conus only. Unfortunately I'm doing all this from my mobile and have no way to do a randomizer.
