I have been cleaning two very grungy Valet Razors. One is an Open Comb made in New York., the other a non comb made Canada. Once they were cleaned up, I was impressed with the beauty of these razors, they are very stunning. The quality build appears to be excellent.

I was wondering what date were Valets made? Were they made as a line of Gillette? Does anyone here use one in their rotation, if so what is your opinion the shaves from the razor? IMG_0970.JPG IMG_0971.JPG

Don't know exactly when they were made.
I have a Gold one with the Valet cutout in the blade holder that requires the blades with the Valet cutout or the Feather SE blades.
I've gotten about 6 great shaves from one blade, so far. I really like it, it's a fantastic shaver.

The open comb is a VC1 and was made from 1922 until approximately 1928. It can use either Feather, original Valet or de-spined single edge blades. The made in Canada model is a VC4 and was made from 1941 until 1946. It has to use either Feather blades or the original Valet blades. Valet called the comb the runner guard. I have specimens of each model you have there and use them regularly because they're great razors and fun to use.

Hey Tom...I have a Valet with a simulated leather strop (I don't know what it's made of but it's not leather). I also have a boatload of razor blades that will fit it...Valet, Crescent, and Surgical Edge. Problem is, I just can't seem to get a good shaving edge on any of my blades. Have you tried the strop I'm talking about? Do I need to find a leather one?? And Brad...your Valets are beautiful!!!

I have never tried to strop a Valet blade, I'm happy using a Feather or de-spined SE blade.

I've tried to bring some original sealed Valet blades back to shaveworthiness using not only the leather strop, but a barber hone. Allowing for the fact that I have no idea what I'm doing with a hone, I have to report failure. I've seen other people write that they were able to get a good shave with the vintage blades, but like Tom, I just use the modern Feather version.

The feather blade gives fantastic shaves.

Definitely going some modern blades for them to give them a try. Thank you for the input.

I have stropped some modified carbon blades and it will help some if you do not over do it. in my experience, using the stropping set up on a modern stainless blade makes the blade worse. it works better to just palm strop those.

The Feathers give a great single-edge shave.

Valet razors give the best and longest lasting shaves I can get. If you are looking for some feather blades just pm me and I can hook you up no problem! I have enough to last me several years!:)
