Just stopped by at Walmart, checked the shaving section for the heck of it. Found some blades (5 pack for $2, ouch). They are Teflon Coated and made in Germany. My guess is they are just rebranded blades. Anyone know of what blade though? Also noticed that started carrying a badger brush (VDH) which is $18

Actually 5 for $2 is not bad for blades you can source locally. Painful is what some stores want for the pack of store-branded Israeli (Personna) blades- $8, comparable to carts.

If they are the VDH blades, run!

Gotcha. I was interested since they are Teflon Coated. Most Teflon blades are pretty smooth

The coating is smooth I believe the problem is the edge.

The VDH blades at HEB's are "ice tempered", whatever that means. Five for $2.98. Like shaving with a hacksaw blade.

Rebranded Merkur blades, then. I would avoid those. Merkur blades do not enjoy a great reputation.
Edit: Merkur is one of the few blades I've used that I've found to be unusable.

So they have the cutting edge of an optimum hacksaw blade?

Merkurs are featured in a "How it's made" episode on how razor blades are made, if anyone is interested. YouTube should have it.

Sounds interesting. Strange that a company who makes pretty legit razors would fall so short with the blades

I strongly disagree with you, they are great............................. in the garage, as a box opener and a scraper!

I think the thing is that they don't so much "make" a pretty legit razor as "rebrand" one that someone else makes. The same, I suspect, goes for the blades. Mercer was probably the only one (or at least the lowest bidder) who would make a VdH-branded blade that met certain specs including price point.

This does make sense. Who manufactures merker razors?
