I find it strange that while razors that give a less than satisfyingly close shave are termed variously as 'mild', 'gentle', and 'suitable for beginners', razor blades that give a similarly less than close shave are lambasted for being utterly rubbish, of poor quality, and to be avoided at all costs. The Vidyut Super-Max stainless is one such much maligned blade. I picked up a pack of 10 for Rs.20 (43 cents) from my local chemist last night. I had never come across these before so headed over to all the shave forums looking for a review. And reviewer after reviewer had blasted this blade for being a dull blade that would have trouble even slicing through butter. And I agree. The blade is not sharp by any means. But it has managed to give me a 100% irritation-free three pass shave. When I pass my palm over my face WTG, the skin is smooth. The shave is what I call a shadow-shave. Look in the mirror and you can see a shadow but feel your skin WTG and it feels great. And zero irritation. I'm going to keep the blades and use all of them. One blade per shave. This blade won't even give you BBS and if you try then you will suffer. But if you keep your expectations low and want a painless shave then this is the blade for you.
Worst commonly sold blades in India The Super-Max Stainless is by far the most common blade seen in stores in India. I have used a range of dull blades including Topaz which is cheaper still than this blade, however this is the only blade which manages to tear up my face and irritates my skin. Others may drag, this one tears. Super-Max has better quality blades in the middle segment Super Stainless, Platinum, the in elite segment Super Stainless Sunrise (Titanium coated), Super Platinum Tiger.
I've had a great shave with the vidyut blade, no tears or pulling or nicks. But like Sir Leanalot said, I did have the shadow. The Super-Max platinum blade was much more likely to slice my throat.
I've had two pretty decent shaves on a Topaz blade so far. Definitely not as sharp as the Astra SP but I got a good close cut. No tugging or pulling. Eh... lol
Has any one ever have consecutive DFS/BBS shaves with an '46 cart with a vidyut Super-max platinum blades? My last 5 shaves 4 with my crat 1 with my merkur progress set on 4, not bad IMHO.
