I know buying straight razors off of ebay can be fraught with surprise and disappointment. Inevitably razors show up reveal some flaw that was undetectable in the photos, resulting in me spending more time in attempting to make it 'good as new'—or a reasonable facsimile— once again. So when I DO land a straight razor that, upon arrival and inspection, exceeds my expectations—particular in far better overall condition than expected—I'm tickled! Thus is the case on today's delivery of a vintage C-MON HF. The razor looked decent in the auction photos (no visible cracks, chips, rust, defects or funky blade wear & edges) and so I took a reasonable gamble on what I thought was a highly-desireable razor in good condition. What I received was a razor in superb condition—not quite NOS, but for the price of what NOS models go for and what this cost me, I thought I did well. No warping of the scales, pins are tight, bolsters intact, the edge and blade condition shows minimal wear—and the coloration on the scales is gorgeous! Other than some general clean-up around the tang & pivot pin—I may add a touch of red to the diamond stamp on the tang—this one is near ready for the hones! Excuse me while I dance… C-MON HF ('Hand-Forged'), Ca 1950-1960; High-carbon Solingen steel blade, measures 11/16" wide—although the box states 5/8"; full-hollow, double shoulder, muted square tip, hammered & blued tang; 3 sets of nickel silver pins, scales of streaked 'Brazilian Horn' celluloid with 'PJM' wedge-end nickel silver bolsters and German silver CMON logo.
Yeah, those bay razors! You need to throw that thing in your clearance pile, or if you can't be bothered, I may have a spot for it over here. Actually, very nice find.
That is a beautiful razor. I keep seeing these pics of beautiful straights and want to start a new AD. Must resist
None so far. Of course I haven't yet brought it to the bench for cleanup and painting touch-up prior to getting it honed. All the C-mons I've honed have taken smooth, easy to get fantastic edges
Nice score Kevin! I think the HF is my favorite of the C-Mons. By all means, re-apply the red to the diamond!
