Some are attracted to the allure of a modern, stainless steel razor. Some prefer the looks and history of a vintage DE. I happen to enjoy both and can get great shaves from both old and new products. The same might be said for scents, blades soaps and brushes. Brushes are an exception, because, as we all know, they don't always age well. I like the allure of vintage hardware and the fact that after 100 years these babies are still going strong. Here's the razor I used this morning.
I'm not at home right now, so I don't have pictures. I love vintage, especially in hand tools. I have a military Gillette service set that I keep displayed by my deployment flag. It was a PIF that has only been used a couple times, but has great personal value simply due to it being a military service set. As far as modern razors, I have only used two; a Merkur 34C and a Maggard V3. If I were to splurge on one, it would be a Rockwell R6. I have read good things about it and can't see myself spending more on a razor. However, to be honest, I can't see myself spending even that much on one. I have read excellent reviews on the ATT razors as well. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
Nothing quite like vintage steel. I'm not saying modern SRs are inferior—not in the least—but I just prefer the quality-made old stuff.
Imagine if those vintage razors could talk. What stories could they tell about the owners? All of the good times and bad, how they were used, maybe passed down from father to son, what the owners liked or didn't like about them, etc.
What if they hated the owners and cut them!? Talk about a twilight zone plot twist. Jeepers creepers, stop giving me weepers!
@Jim99 Yet again...What if the razor liked you (the owner), but the razor blades hated you and tried to get away by jumping in the toilet to get flushed away and out of your life? Oh. Wait a minute....
I'm a vintage guy when it comes to safety razors. My only modern is the one that started it all, an EJ DE89. When it comes to straights, I want them all
I am partial to vintage razors. The older, the better... I do have a couple of Edwin Jaggars and a Scotch & Stowe, but the vintage rule my den.
I'm split, i get the allure of vintage, but the flash of new hits me as well. Currently, I'm using a barbasol floating head and a parker variant. Both are great.
Same as @mrchick . My de's and se'sare all vintage. A two way swinger when it comes to str8's . I have a 200 year old one and a 4 month old one.
Vintage have a lot of appeal for me. I have a couple of old safety razor hones that are just too cool. I was fortunate enough to find a mint Rolls Razor that is a work of art. Having said that, I almost always use a modern razor. I find they work better for me. I like both vintage and modern, for practical use, I seem to go modern.
I have a MÜHLE R89 Grande (mild) & a FaTiP Piccolo (aggressive), but get my best New razor shave from The Bunny injector. On the Vintage front a '59 Fat Boy is my most often used, but a '46-'47 Aristocrat & a '55 Red Tip SS both see service for variety.
