Most think of vintage Williams as any with tallow as the first ingredient and rightly so I think. But now that Williams has been discontinued, aren't all Williams Mug Soaps now vintage?
Interesting exercise in semantics. I would argue that the classification vintage in this case is contingent upon two factors. Age and reformulation date. The recently discontinued Williams does not qualify as vintage considering this criteria. I think we can now safely say that all Williams formulas are officially headed for unobtainium classification.
No. The idea of vintage carries with it the idea of being old, not just recently discontinued. Even if they were still making the old formula, a puck made 50+ years ago would be considered vintage, the puck made yesterday would not.
It will be interesting to see how our shaving world forum lexicon regarding Williams will evolve. For some, it will always be referred to as crap.
I find that true with Old Spice After Shave. Although many vehemently disagree. Same with the original formula deo.
Correct. Antique is anything over 100 years old. Vintage is anything older than 20 years old, but less than 100 years old. ...and Williams, of whatever age, is still crap compared to even a modest and completely random selection of modern soaps. That's a hill I'm willing to die on. Lol. It's one advantage was it's low price. The fact that an authentic old time shave soap brand that was in actual stores, a lot of them, during a resurgence in people learning to wet shave and wanting to save money, still managed to fail, despite being the cheapest option of them all, speaks for itself.
JoAnna, our own Queen of Blades, makes it, thus the TSD name. Highly recommend it. click on SHOP at the top of the page under the banner. A great variety of scents, soaps, creams, aftershaves, balms...
I have never tried "vintage" Williams Mug Shaving Soap but the "modern" version was my first North American soap I used. From the very first shave it proved to be an excellent shaving soap, of exceptional value. Yes, its scent is pedestrian. Like its name, simple, unpoetic and uninspiring. Intriguing by the inclusion of the word "mug", but telling of the secret. Never let me down and always putting many others to shame. The lather is exceptional, in my opinion. Luckily, I am well-stocked. Oh, forgot to mention, I love the scent.
Never thought I could disagree with something so much. But...I do. (referencing the vintage, naturally)
